I am very interested in Speech Language Pathology, but I don't know what majors allow you to become a speech pathologist?

Thanks!

My school offers a B.S. in Communication Sciences and Disorders that leads into speech pathology as well as audiology. With a BS you can be a Speech Language Therapy Assistant. You need a masters usually to be a full Speech Pathologist and an Au.D. for audiology.

Linguistics and/or Cognitive Science if your school offers it.

You can major in anything to get into SLP for grad school. I would check with the grad school I was interested in for pre reqs they require as many differ a little. A person with a non science bachelors is looking at 1 year of pre reqs usually, so it is important to get these out of the way in undergrad!

Most schools require: 3 lab sciences (usually bio, A&P, Chem) Phonology, and Statistics. In addition there are usually some intro courses, though many can be skipped.

Any major can get you into an SLP program, I personally would recommend going for a high GPA non science major (especially something very nontraditional for a person applying to SLP programs) I did this and have a 3.896 GPA (i made 2 B’s and the rest A’s undergrad) which compared to many of the other applicants that had science majors I am sure I had a better GPA. It also makes the interviews more interesting, neither grad program I interviewed at had ever had a Police & Forensic Sciences major with a Home Ec minor. We spent the majority of the interviews talking about the difference in CSI and real life, and why a 300lb redneck would minor in Home Ec.
