How can I build my vocabulary?

Well I want to do well on the SAT but I would like to also sound smarter than i actually am in the future by using bigger words.. but how can I learn an easy way??
is there some type of software/tips?? thanks :)

I both winced and laughed at your post. Other than for the SAT, the point of acquiring a larger vocabulary is that “bigger” words have nuances and connotations to them. Synonyms don’t mean exactly the same thing–they have subtle differences. Sometimes, the etymology or history of a word will add a unique flavor to the meaning. This will help you to create a clearer picture of what you are describing with your words; in primitive terms, it’s like using a screen with a higher resolution, 64-bit vs. 8-bit. To a lesser extent, I suppose using different synonyms makes writing less boring and allows one to not repeatedly use the same word.

Get one of those Word-a-day calendars from the bookstore, the kind which tear off like post-its. Also, it helps if you have a dictionary and thesaurus and use it when you encounter a word you don’t know. An electronic dictionary takes up less space and you can hear how the word is pronounced. Finally, attempt to use these new words in your writing. At first, you may not use them exactly correctly, but eventually you will gain command over these new words.

Direct Hits for the win.

FreeRice is a great site for learning new words, but that won’t help you use them intelligently. The only way to “get smarter” like that is to read, read, read.

get barrons 3500 words

Try getting a daily word calendar and use the daily words at least 5 times that day

Use Anki. Import the SAT words deck from the internet.

Study prefixes and suffixes and maybe a few Greek/Latin roots.

read some classic novels. Those books are tough to apprehend or watch The Big Bang Theory if u want some breaks. good luck

Become an avid reader starting in first grade. Really, that’s the best way. But lacking that, try signing up for the daily email question-of-the-day from College Board.

I think one of my avid readers inadvertently picked up lot of vocab from the dark yet fun “Series of Unfortunate Events” book series in 4th grade. He’s mainly a math geek, but he did great on verbal SAT too.

I’ve heard the book Direct Hits was very good. Try doing 10 words a day and plan out your time before your test. Review the words at the end of each week and rinse and repeat

Any good vocab learning books you recommend?
