How can I display language proficiency w/o high school classes or SAT Subject Test?

About three months ago, I started teaching myself Russian (like, seriously - bought a workbook, computer program, etc.), and so far it's going well...except how would I show admissions that I'm proficient when it comes time to apply? Obviously I'm not even close to being fluent, but I'm a sophomore right now, and my school doesn't exactly offer Russian (as most schools don't, I suppose). What should I do?

I'm also on my third year of French (in school), so foreign lang requirement isn't a problem...just thought Russian would be an interesting language to learn. I didn't start so I'd have something else to put on a resume, but I keep reading that a lot of the more selective universities like the whole 2+ languages thing. As much as I like Russian so far, would it make more sense to learn a language that has an SAT subject test?

There’s a section on the common app where you can list languages you know (and if you can speak/read/write) so you could include it there. If you’re interested in Russian, keep up with that and list it on the common app, and take the SAT language test in French.
Good luck and good job with that initiative, it’s a cool thing to do (:

See if there are any russian competitions you can enter in your town/state, and also there’s a prototype AP russian test by ACTR  You should take that too once you have a pretty good grasp of the language. It’s a pretty challenging test  PM me if you have any questions

Thanks! helpful feedback :)

There exists a standardized test for Russian as a foreign language, supervised by the Russian Ministry of Education and Science:

My D taught herself Japanese. She wrote about it in her supplement - not to just say that she learned the language but used it to make some larger point about her life, background, world view etc. You have more than one way to show.
