How can I do this?

I want to intern or volunteer at a law office. Do I just walk in and show my interest or send them an email? How can I go about doing this? I want to go to law school and I'm VERY interested in law. Even if I'm just making copies, I think I could benefit greatly from it. What do I do?

You CCers seem to be experts in doing these type of things, so...

Honestly, you need to contact a law firm, probably a small one. They will probably not let you intern, but I can’t see them denying you the chance to make copies. Just know, it may not be glamorous, and the hours may be strange. I’m volunteering with my city government, they wanted me to intern, but 40 hours a week for no pay is a bit much for me, particularly when I just shred papers and pick up mail.

I’d love to volunteer with my city government. How did you get involved with that? I’m currently volunteering with my cities Democratic Committee but that’s usually only a couple hours here and there for big events. Nothing massive.

Connects-- actually I’m a member of my city’s Mayor’s youth council (Note I don’t live in a particularly large city… but it’s not small either) so convincing the advisor to allow me to shred papers and collect mail for several hours a day was not very difficult. You have to go out and fight for opportunities.
