How can I get a summer internship if im only in high school???

Im trying realllyyy hard to find an internship in NYC for next summer..and every place tells me that I'm too young! How can I find a legit internship if I'm only in high school?

craigslist

Try looking for a job. Internships usually aren’t offered to HS students.

But what if I want to do actual work. Like I don’t want to spend a whole summer working the cash register at Jamba Juice…I want to actually learn something

get a job at jamba juice and get experience in a work environment. No one wants a high school intern (unless you have a connection). You have plenty of time ahead of you to “actually learn something.” If you have a job now internships will be more likely to take you on in the future when you have a skillset to complement your work ethic.

but say i did want a real internship…do you know how id go about doing it?

Ask your parents and teachers if they have contacts that would provide an internship opportunity. I assume that you have an outstanding record so that they would overlook the age issue.

BTW, working at any job gives you real experience. I don’t know what field you want to go into but you can learn a lot in a job a McDonalds.

Look at local government offices or campaigns. They are always thrilled to have free help. I interned with the governor of my state.

thanks for the suggestion. Ill ask around

and youd think so…but ive had both. I had a job at a bagel store and the only things i really learned were how to make 30 different bagel sandwitches and how to deal with “slow” people.

Then this summer I had a real internship at a marketing firm, and I learned more about business than I have learned in all my years in school and from my surroundings

i noticed a huge difference, so I don’t really want a job at McDonalds or something again

You may learn more in terms of content. But regular jobs teach you people skills. You’re dealing with different people during your entire shift. You’re actually working under an authority. As an unpaid intern, you have much more flexibility.

You can ask your HS about their job-shadow program. Ask to shadow several individuals and go shadow them for a day or a few days. At the end, you could ask what can you do to prepare for that kind of career, including internships. Does your HS offer any kind of opportunity for credit?

Internships have become extremely competitive over the last few years that even it’s tough to get one as a freshman or sophomore, let alone a high school student.

my high school doesn’t really offer anything job related. So im just trying to find an internship on my own

I am looking for an unpaid internship, if that makes a difference

Just try asking people around. Maybe your friend’s friend’s mom or aunt’s sister’s friend or something like that haha.

Though this isn’t really a real internship, you could always ask or email a professor at a local college/university if they are looking for assistants or interns to help with his/her current research. Just be sure to check out the prof’s background so you’re not totally clueless. I personally think it would be something impressive to add onto a college app.

thats actually a really good idea…thanks! ill try asked a college prof
