I currently am on the fence between pursuing a JD or going the business route and eventually earning my MBA. I am only a Sophomore so I know I have plenty of time to think about this but it is never too early to look forward to the future.

Certain questions:

Would going to a public school significantly hurt my chances? University of Kentucky is a tier 1 university according to US News but who am I kidding it's nothing special

Any majors that would help? I am a double major (finance and economics) which I consider pretty helpful since I hear economics is good for pre-law.

What kind of work experience/internships should I pursue?

So what kind of GPA/LSAT score combination would do the trick in order to get accepted by a Virginia, Michigan, or Cornell?

thanks for any advice

Public School: Nope, usually not at all. Not for Harvard at least. Yale and Stanford may look down on it VERY SLIGHTLY, but the caliber of your school doesn’t matter if you have proven yourself otherwise.

Law school’s don’t care about your major as long it was not “pre-law.” Then it is sometimes viewed as a negative. Sadly, the major that you can get the highest GPA is recommended. I personally would also recommended to pursue a major that you like and is at least moderately challenging so that you’re not blown in the face when you reach law school. Also this is a personal recommendation, but a humanities/social science class that gets you reading lots of dense material/writing myriads of papers will definitely help.

Double majors DO NOT HELP at all, except for Yale and Stanford. But only by a little bit.

Internships: Anything you enjoy. Like I enjoyed public service internships in my municipal government. That was fine for NYU law. It doesn’t have to be too great or significant unless you’re aiming for Yale and Stanford. For these schools, you would need more significant extracurriculars.

GPA/LSAT combination:

And as a side note, the top 14, not the top 15 are the most elite schools. These “top 14” schools have been in the top 10 in the past which is why they are regarded as the best law schools. Sadly UCLA or UTexas will give you less opportunities for high paying jobs than a t14 school.
