How can I get into the USNA?

I am a freshman in high school, and I've always wanted to go to the Naval Academy. I am doing really well in NJROTC at my school, so I was wondering if that would help. I am actually taking precalculus in ninth grade, and my gpa is 3.86 unweighted. I mostly wanted to know how I can improve or continue certain things that I am doing, and what a person who got accepted would look like on paper. I also run track and hope to make varsity sometime within the coming years. Finally, what would be an average SAT score vs. a Naval Academy score?

P.S. I want to be a Marine officer.

Sounds like your grades are excellent. Keep that up. High grades and SAT scores are necessary for the Naval Academy.

The middle 50% of Academy midshipmen is 1160 to 1370 (verbal and math, but not writing). This means that 25% of midshipmen had SATs lower than 1160.

The Marines demand that you be very physically fit and reasonably athletic. So, you will need to work out and, if possible, participate in varsity athletics in high school (JV is okay).

Also, I recommend that you apply for a NROTC scholarship as a back up to attending Annapolis.

Be open to all appointments. Graduates of the academies can choose their branch. Foster a relationship with your Congressional delegation. Most appointments come from them…or have parent win the CMOH. :)

While is is true that the academies will allow their graduates to switch branches, this process is both rare and difficult. Do not count on it

No relationship is necessary with your Congressional delegation. Just go to their individual websites and see how they want you to apply to the academies. You can apply to all of the academies. No need to choose just one. Anybody interested in the Marines, should probably consider West Point too.

Besides the Naval Academy and the NROTC scholarship, you can get a Marine Corps commission through the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. You could even remain a civilian in the maritime industry. Lots of career options via USMMA, but not many academic options. You will only be allowed to major in subjects relating to ships and the shipping industry. No history majors, for example. To see the majors at USMMA, go to this website:

Could work for you, but I recommend the Naval Academy or NROTC as better options.
