I took the ACT this past September and got a composite score of 30. My only good section was math: 33. All of the others were: English 28, Reading 28, and Science 29.
With this said, I am taking the ACT again this December in hopes for 33+. And I came to the conclusion that if I can raise my English score (as it is the easiest part to improve drastically, according to many CCers) to at least a 33+, then I should be able to increase my overall composite score.
To help with my studying, I bought the Barron’s ACT 36 and just started looking at the English part.
I’m not really sure how to approach this. I was thinking that I should just memorize all of the grammar rules and do as much practice tests I can and hope for the best.
@golfcashoahu Woah it’s kind of pricey lol. How much did your English score improve by using that book? Btw, I also went on Erica Meltzer’s blog website and it had all of the grammar rules. Do you think that will help?
@clichescreenname Honestly, I suggest you purchase Barron’s Act 36 : Aiming for the Perfect Score by Alexander Spare… 3rd Edition. It will help you raise all of your sections… by A LOT. I had a 29 composite before the book, and after, I got a 35.
If you need help finding it for a good price, let me know! I find all my books for cheap.
No way. ACT 36 is great for prep for ALL sections…OP asked specifically about english. I don’t know of one person who used Erica Meltzer’s English Book and didn’t score well. Like I said, I scored 35 with it. I strongly recommend it.
Wow! I may get the book. @aznboi4981 When did you get your composite of 35?! That’s crazy! Was it this past October test? Hopefully I will be able to witness the same gain!
@aznboi4981 Yeah, I bought the ACT 36 recently and haven’t gotten the chance to go through it. I’m taking the ACT in two weeks so I guess I should get started lol. I feel like I just need to improve my English and Reading by a few points to get a 33 composite. Thanks
I scored a 36 in English (Oct) and I mostly used the Red Book. During the summer I had checked out the Barron’s 36 and the only section I actually read part of was the English, but I don’t think that helped me a lot. I think the most valuable thing is doing a lot of real practice so you intuitively learn the rules.
