I am very interested in applying for the RPI BS/MD program because I feel like it offers a lot of opportunities for myself and focuses on what kind of a career I want as a physician.
Here is a brief rundown of my current info:
Current High School Sophomore
GPA- 3.4 UW, 3.6 W
Class Rank- N/A (School Doesn’t Say)
EC: Member of high school band since freshman year, Member of ROTC since sophomore year, Member of Biotech club and HOSA since sophomore year. During the fall semester I plan to join our schools Science Honor Society
Other Info: I am fluent in Spanish and Hispanic. I Moved schools from freshman to sophomore year, my uncle and cousin attended RPI if that helps.
None of my family or anyone close to me has worked in medicine before, so I don’t really know how to shadow a doctor.
Any Advice, Help or Just General information that you think will help me to get in to the RPI BS/MD Program is appreciated.
I also got a 1220 on my PSAT freshman year if that helps.
For RPI/AMC its almost an unwritten prerequisite to have research experience, otherwise your stats need to be great, which unfortunately is not the case for you. You definitely need to work on improving your weighted and unweighted GPA and your SAT/PSAT score. Also, you need some leadership/awards and you definitely need some hospital volunteering or shadowing experience. I think you should first try to focus on your grades, and then try to reach out to a local hospital to volunteer/shadow. After, try to get research experience because it’s pretty difficult to get an interview without one and the interview revolves around it. But you have time right now, so focus on grades and then focus on the medical activities. You can get there, but you definitely have an uphill battle right now. GL!
Thank you, do you think an unweighted gpa of 3.7 will allow me to be more competitive for the school? What kind of GPA do you think I should be aiming for?
