How can I let admissions know I am right for the school as well as right for me

I am a junior in High School just outside of Boston. I really really really want to go to Emerson and I am basically willing to go into debt to go there. It is my top choice school and I'm determined to get in. For reference, I'll just give a background of my resume:

A's and A-'s in English and History
B's-C+'s in Math
B's-A's in Science
C's in French, B+'s in Latin

My unweighted is around a 3.2 and my weighted is 6.3. I take honors History and English, I'm taking AP next year for definitely English, possibly History. I am a tech head (I am in charge of lighting) in Drama and I've been doing it for two years. Our Drama program is the second best in the state. I was in community service club (still go to meetings now and then) and I've written for the now non-existent newspaper all three years.

Next year, I am taking an independent study in journalism and I am basically reestablishing and running the newspaper, as well as being the president of the club. I am also putting out a podcast in two weeks or so on student apathy that I am getting 2 credits for.

So, I feel like I put myself out as a student who cares and actually has a passion for what I'm doing and what I want to go into (Writing/Literature, and Publishing). What else more can I do? My grades are kind of crappy because of math usually, so I want to do everything I can to recover from it. Is an interview a good idea as well? What else can I do to up my chances on getting in? Also, how do I stand against other kids who may apply/do I have a shot at all?

Thanks guys!

Emerson doesn’t interview. Your GPA is a bit low for Emerson so work on getting your grades up as much as possible.
It is important that you have experience in the area you want to major in but be aware that most who apply to Emerson do (it is pretty much expected), so that alone will not get you accepted.

Don’t worry! Look… Emerson cares about grades, but also ur lucky cause

WLP is the least impacted major (more spaces to get in and the least competetive)

They like to see arts involvement

I got in as a transfer college student… with a GED, a d average high school record, and a 3.3 GPA, which is good but not really high.

They seem to care more about your unique experiences, and since you want to go into WLP a big part is going to be your college essay. My advice is not to try to present the perfect picture of yourself. Don’t listen to what people say. The big deal with Emerson is that it has to be about your voice.

Start Emailing the Admissions counselors in your region now! Email them, and ask questions… bug the crap out of them because it matters. They will see your commitment, and you become more than a name.

The great part about the school is that they don’t put a high premium on math. (if you took 4 years in high school you don’t need to take it there) But, they will look for challenging things you did beyond community service. Like starting a writing club on Campus.

Work on a portfolio of writing. The best poems, papers, articles or whatever you have done in your Junior/Senior year that showcases your writing talent. Alot of students neglect that and send in another essay, try a poem, a shortstory, whatever, but as I said make it your voice!

If you have anyquestions, let me know =) Good luck, and you should look forward to it. I never thought in a million years i’d go to Emerson, it wasn’t even an option, you just have to keep the door open for whichever possibility it is.

I think you have a pretty damn good shot. You are doing all the right things, the more the academics comes up the better, but more importantly is to take a holistic approach and just tackle it. It took me a long time of visiting, getting involved, apply for early action, talk to students, network, hell even go to a workshop and meet a teacher, get involved. Of all the schools I applied to, I spent the most time invested in Emerson and it paid off.

Don’t think interms of other students, they go with odd balls, set yourself apart =)

The above poster definitely had it right, but just to add:

Emerson doesn’t care about math too much. I suck at math, and dropped it at the beginning of the year. And I was accepted Early Action for Journalism and I’m in the Honors Program!

I would say that you need to make sure your college essay is kickass. Show your spunk and personality.

Sounds like you have an impressive list of extracirriculars, so keep it up!

Thanks for all the help guys! You really boosted my confidence! My list is basically Emerson, NYU, and BU at the top…I’m probably not going to get into NYU and I have a 50/50 at BU I believe. I’d love to go to Emerson but then there is money involved…so we’ll see.

Is there anything I can think about for my essay? I am thinking about having writing it on being a role model for my brothers and helping raise them (I live in a family with a single mother whos in nursing school and a dad who lives in another town and works a lot, so I’ve done a fair share of child care haha) I figure that would be a good topic.

Thanks again guys!
