I’m currently enrolledin community college and planning an Associates degree in History and later on attending 4 year college. I know most people say its a useless degree, but I don’t want to give my second thought on this because I know how I am going to use this degree in life. My main reasons to major in history are: 1) teaches me how to write. Now, I’m not a skilled writer and I’m hopeful that writing rigorously in college would build my foundation of writing, and helps me get to the level of where I should be. 2) develops critical thinking skills. I assume a lot of reading is required for this major. Reading books closely and giving my own interpretation about the book that I read is the crucial step to develop critical thinking. 3) teaches me to communicate effectively. I have always had difficulty in communicating my ideas to people. It’s partly because English is my second language and I have got speaking anxities, I carried this anxiety throughout highschool and now I’m making slight improvement in overcoming it, but still it scares me to make a phone call and speak in class discussions. I’m positive that it will fade away as I begin to participate in class discussions. I think this sums up my question. I would take every suggestion and advice from you guys. I’m just a guy who wants to step out of comfort zone and do stuffs in life that scares me. I just don’t want to be a mediocre.
