How can I start Model UN in my high school?

I've seen everything online about how to start it but I'm still confused. Once I get a teacher to sponsor my club then what exactly do we do in the club? Prepare for a conference? And what exactly is a conference...........lol
Also it says the club needs to raise funds- what would I do with the funds? I am confused about everything haha. Thank you

If you don’t even know what MUN does, why do you feel compelled to “start” one? How do you know that it doesn’t suck? This kinda smells like resume padding…

Hi!

I’m a huge M.U.N fan and currently the VP of the club at my school. First: Find a sponsor. Typically this will be a history teacher or someone with knowledge in debate or politics. In my case, it’s an English teacher(she’s fantastic!).

Second: Do your research. Understand what M.U.N is. It’s a lot of fun. Try to find local conferences at your local universities. They’re generally cheaper. Since you don’t know what a conference is, do your research. I recommend www.bestdelegate.com

Third: Preparing for a conference is simple. Make sure you have enough members. For each conference, it’s different but typically you’ll need around 8-12 members to make a delegation to represent your country. Do your research for your assigned committee. I cannot stress this enough! It’s imperative you know your facts.

Also get your club members confident in public speaking. During the meetings, make everyone talk eloquently for one minute about any topic of their choosing. Then go into debates. A random topic, each person has to talk for a minute and let them go back and forth and construct a cohesive argument.

Fourth: Fundraising is quite easy. Do whatever you can to raise funds. My school has been supporting the MUN program for years so our fundraising requirement is nonexistent for local conferences. When we go out of state to conferences at UPenn, Georgetown, UChicago, Miami, Boston College, etc… we require funds to pay for plane tickets as well as the hotel fees and registration fees. This year, to go to the conference at UPenn, it cost 13,000 for a delegation of about 16 members. You won’t need to worry this for your first year or two as you’ll probably be sticking to local conferneces where the cost is $30 registration a student and gas money.
