How can I stop making careless mistakes in Chem SATII or other SATII's in general?

Hello everyone!

I’m taking chem practice tests and consistently getting 730-750 barron’s and 740-ish princeton due to really, really, REALLY careless mistakes! My fear is that because the curve on these is so generous, I will show up to the test and make the same amount of careless mistakes and get a much lower score.

When I say careless, I mean like… reading “increase” as “decrease” or not reading all the options or math errors.

Anyone have any tips? I’ve tried writing all the errors out in lists, but I always seem to have this consistent crop of mistakes on the test!

Thanks!

I used to have this problem! I found it helpful if I underlined key words like “increase” as I read the question/answers. Also, never pick an answer until you’ve read all of the options. For harder questions, I would sometimes go through them all with the mindset of “is this a possible answer?” and eliminate each one. Some people suggest going through the questions slowly, but what I actually found more helpful was to go through them relatively quickly (not rushing of course), leaving enough time at the end to check over my answers (I would put a star next to questions I especially wanted to check because of complicated calculations etc.)
