...when they are not allowed to work for monetary compensation in the U.S?
(don't we need solid internships during the undergrad years to land on a great business-related jobs?)
..

thanks in advance for sharing your opinion.

well, I am a international but im canadian so im allowed to work in the states,,,,, i think other countries' students are allowed to work in the area that they major

I believe you might get some kind of OPT thing? Like, you can work for only a year or something like that?

In any case, you can definitely get solid non-paid internships :)

i don think non-paid can be so solid

Unpaid internships are aplenty (given the choice, I'm sure companies would rather not have to pay you), and you get the same work experience, so I agree with youkosiren completely: non-paid internships can definitely be solid.

thanks everyone. I appreciate it.

one more question though:
I heard stern wouldn't allow its students to get unpaid internships. Is there any truth behind it?

liangshengtm: Umm, no, where did you hear that Canadians can work there? My friend who is a sophomore at Stern, who is from Calgary like I am, told me even Canadians can't get paid internships there freshman year. they have to apply for the OPT thing

Erm, you are allowed to work full time during holidays and up to 20 hours per week during the semester as an international student on an F1 Visa status.

In other words, don't worry about it.

All international students, including Canadians, have to get the appropriate approvals prior to working in the U.S. if they are on an F1 visa. Off-campus part time work can only be done after one full year of attendance at a U.S. college, so you will not be able to work during freshman year off-campus.

really? so if I go to US I cant work in the first summer(the summer of the freshman year)????

and how about after freshman year, I can do any job I want?
