How can schools impose 'application limits' ?

I think this whole application process should get much more transparent, especially from the side of the school.

My school imposes a strict limit of 8 univs/colls in the US, excluding the UC system (which has a separate application)

I'm not looking to circumvent this rule, but i'm very much curious - my school uses the common app, so how can they impose limits ? Isnt their job simply to upload the transcripts and recos, after which its my job to fill in the rest and send the apps happily ever after ?

Different school districts have different rules. Labor is involved. I’ve heard of situations where after a set number, a fee is charged for any additional college application packages sent. Schools have limited resources and students shouldn’t be surprised if their sense of entitled service clashes with what the school is willing to deliver. Remember, the overwhelming majority of college bound seniors send on average TWO applications. Only CC denizens think that 8-12 is normal. It’s not. And it’s not strange for counselors offices to impose limits.

Their job is to serve all the students with the resources at hand – not only to be subject to what they consider unreasonable requests by a handful of students unwilling to trim down their target schools list.

I don’t really have much against the limit, I just want to know how can this limit be imposed if the Common App is being used ?

As the GC must fill out supplements for each college, they say: we will complete eight colleges’ applications on your behalf. no more.

Just guessing but that’s a simple mechanism to me.

Hm… the supplements do not require anything from the GC. Odd… there must be some mechanism

I bet if you ask your counselor nicely and have a decent reason they will do it. they aren’t thatttt evil :)

OP, are you sure that once everything is uploaded by the HS you are done with them? If so, I agree that they couldn’t control or monitor how many times you hit the “submit” button.

So, are you absolutely sure there are no “individualized” reports the colleges will require?

That’s what i’m wondering… i’ve been through the common app a few times… all the school needs to do is upload the recos, transcript. Maybe they have to upload it for each and every application ? so that way they know… Well i’m pretty sure they get to know where all you’ve sent your application so in a way they can get you screwed for crossing limits…

I just reviewed the Common App website and I think you’re right about your HS only uploading info once regardless of the number of colleges you apply to.

I’m also fairly certain that your HS has no ability to see a list of schools that receive your applications.

It seems to me that, so long as you are using the Common App, your HS has no ability to enforce their limit, and no way to know if you are disregarding their restriction.

I could be wrong. Maybe somebody more knowledgable will add more info.

Good luck.

The teachers may not do the recommendations online, and the school may choose to mail transcripts.

My school recently changed policies to online for everything… transcript, recos. But I guess it would make sense for info of where I applied to to go to my counselors, right? They need to maintain admissions statistics…

From the commonapp website
MUST I SUBMIT THE SAME FORMS MULTIPLE TIMES FOR EACH STUDENT FOR ALL HIS/HER DIFFERENT COLLEGES?
No. Once you have submitted a form for a student, you never have to submit it again. It’s immediately available for download by any Common Application member institution to which the student has applied. And as the student applies to more colleges in the future, it then becomes available to those colleges as well. Note: the Naviance system functions differently. Please contact Naviance support for details.

That rules out them needing to upload it each time and thus stop after x number of apps… now to gather more info.

Darn!
From Commonapp Website
Counselors may, however, view which schools the applicant is applying to, the decision plans and affiliated deadlines for those schools and the submission and download status for those applications.

So much for democracy! sigh
