Also I am an international student, if that influences anything.

So, can anyone please tell me how good an applicant need to be in order to be accepted by UM Engineering?
Thanks very much.

You’re good enough. The problem is twofold: you are an international student, and many other applicants are as qualified as you. Internationals have a tough time getting into school, because there is so much competition. You fall solidly in the top-middle 50% of SAT scores for that school, with your math obviously being exceptional. But so do other internationals. Really it’s just a crap shoot. Also, without seeing your essays and aspects other than numbers, a comparison to other students would be superficial.

jiaoda, you must be aware that they have deferred most EA applicants. I’ve even seen some 2400 SAT guys being deferred. If you want a deeper insight into this question, visit the University of Michigan section of this forum.

I am international and was accepted RD with the following stats:
SAT: 670 CR, 780 M, 680 WR
SAT II: 800 Physics, 800 Math 2
TOEFL: 105
My most significant ECs are airplanes flying, aerodynamics researching and R/C planes building.

Wait until regular decision and you should be fine; your situation is the same as almost all internationals who applied EA.

Thanks for the message. I wasn’t aware that UM is such a competitive school. I thought all great students applied to other schools, such as ivy, MIT, Caltech…And I didn’t really apply for EA. I submitted my application in January, and they gave me a deferral letter in less a month…Anyways, I feel better knowing the fact that a person with aerodynamics researching experience was deferred too.

By the way, flying a plane must be super cool.
