How can you tell what your high school's reputation is with colleges?

<p>I have seen people post that they/their child attend a competitive college, or otherwise describe what they think its reputation is. How do they get this information?<br>
Is there anyway to tell what colleges students from your high school have been accepted to in the past?</p>

<p>The rule of thumb is that if your child is not ranked #1 (or sometimes even if they are), they attend a competitive high school.</p>

<p>If you need to ask whether or not it’s a competitive high school, it’s probably not a competitive high school.</p>

<p>A working definition of “competitive high school” is one that typically sends 100% of its senior class to four-year colleges and 10% or more to highly selective schools. </p>

<p>If your high school only sends half its class to college, then being in the top 10% really means that you are only in the top 20% of college-bound seniors. Similarly, if your school only has one or two admissions annually to Ivies, then squeaking into the top 5% probably is not going to cut it.</p>

<p>I don’t believe what was said above is true.If it was than no urban public school would have a “good rep.”.If your SAT/AP scores etc are good than where you go to HS is irrelevant.</p>

<p>If your high school doesn’t have Naviance, you can just ask the counselors, and/or look at the school’s profile. This is something that’s sent out to colleges so that they can understand a student’s application in the context of the high school. Profiles generally provide a list of where the previous year’s (or two) graduates were accepted and/or attend.</p>

<p>The absolute easiest way is to ask a local real estate broker what the reputation of the school district it. Won’t work 100% of the time, but will probably be pretty close.</p>

<p>My kids go to urban public high school. Freshman year 750 students sr. year 425. Half of the srs. don’t go to college. This school sends multiple kids to the Ivy League every year. If you’re in the top 10% of your class at this school you’ll get into the best schools in the country irregardless of the riff-raff that comes with inner city schools.</p>
