Some schools are known for grade inflation, while others are known for being notoriously hard to actually get an A. Where does NYU rank on that spectrum from your experience?
I would NOT say NYU is known for grade inflation. My D is a Tisch student- the professors gave 0 As freshman year - saying that a B meant you were progressing properly. My D was a straight A student all through HS- took some adjustment
I’m a student at NYU and I would say that it really depends on the student. I also happen to be in Tisch and while I’m probably in a different major than toowonderful’s daughter, I did manage to receive A’s or A-'s in all my tisch classes so far. I also am a politics double major as well, and have received all A’s in those classes. The only classes which I’ve got less than A- in have been a couple business classes I was trying out. That said, at least in the Politics major intro classes, the professors are actively working to combat grade inflation and have weighted the grades such that only 20% of the class is permitted to get an A (and similar percentages get Bs, Cs, etc). Recently my Tisch studio classes have also been restructured to–putting it plainly–force people to actually do the work, so I imagine that getting an A in those classes will get more challenging. I can’t really speak to the other majors though, and I think it really varies. Hope this helps!
