How close can one get?

How close to the dorms (particularly interested in Sharp) can one get in a car for unloading?

My S was in Sharp this past year. Some cars can unpack right next to Sharp. We were told to unload about 100 feet up the road (it had been raining & everything was muddy that day) Even if you are the one at the front of the line, the building is L shaped and the drop off is at the tip of the L. My son’s room happened to be at the entire other end of the L. It was a long haul – and then up to the 4th floor. We got some help with the boxes from the ROTC guys. Most of the time we ended up walking the stairs to the 4th floor because the elevators on move-in day were always full. We heard that Sharp had the longest lines and delays and traffic last year on move-in day (out of all the dorms). Hopefully things will run more smoothly & efficiently this year. But in any case, expect to sweat.

Great info. Thanks!

How do we know where we are supposed to drop off? I thought we would get something in the mail with specifics but haven’t so far. My daughter’s in JL.

If you go to the university housing “Arrive!” website and click on “move in” there are maps, directions, and temporary parking permits availabe. My daughter is also in JL and I have not seen anything in the mail either, so I think you have to go online and print out what you need.

Dont forget to label all your boxes/luggage/etc with your kiddo’s name (first initial last name is good enough) and dorm/room number so it gets delivered to the right place when you drop it off in front of the dorm.

And martinigirl–
The 4th fl of Sharp is nuthin’! When we moved DS into Monroe freshman year (he insisted on the “real freshman” experience rather than Butler) he was on the 11th floor!! And yes- they reserve the elevators for luggage and boxes on move in day-- not people (til the end of the day). That was a lot of walking up those stairs!

Thank you, dfunckmom! I either overlooked that or it’s been added since last time I looked at the site.

Jym 626 --ah, that’s the situation we have. 11th floor of Monroe. Husband and son were due to accompany us, but now son is scheduled for surgery on the 20th, so it’ll be myself and DD. -How helpful -and numerous- are those ROTC guys?

And we’ll be in a taxi. Hopefully, it can get to the drop off area and unload us without a ton of expensive "waiting’ time.

I’m in ROTC, and I’ve done the move in for the past two years. We are technically only supposed to help move boxes from the Fedex trucks. They supply us with the dollies to move boxes, so we’re supposed to move their boxes. There’s about 10-15 of us that help out at a time. We line up at the Fedex trucks, and as soon as someone goes to pick up their boxes, the Fedex workers stack them on our dollies and we take them to the dorm. We then put them in the lobbies for the other move-in helpers (often members of the Greek community and other on-campus groups) to put on the elevators to send upstairs.

If you’re driving here and moving everything in from your car, I think it’s up to you to move the belongings from the car to the dorm, though I’m not positive. Another group may help with that. It’s always been so hectic near the Fedex trucks that I’ve never been able to experience move in anywhere else. (I am also a member of the Greek community, and a lot of my sorority sisters are helping with move-in as well. I’ll find out details from what they’re planning on helping with, and see if it will benefit people moving items from their car!).

Tulanebound-
There are a bunch of students (not necessarily ROTC-- just volunteers) who will be there to unload your stuff, put it in the lobby in piles and cart it up to your DD’s door. That’s why it is imperative that all containers are labelled.
And, if you want to avoid a line of cars and hence a wait, get there either EARLY or late. If they say unpacking starts at 9, get there at 8:30.

Good luck!! My DS heads back tomorrow. So weird to think he’s an upperclassman!

There are over 600 Move In Volunteers helping move students’ belongings from cars to dorm rooms this year. The cars are directed by TUPD to pull up as close to the building as possible in a congo-line fashion. Then, Orientation Coordinators and Move in Volunteers will rush the car, help you unload, label your belongings with a room number and name, and then help you carry the boxes upstairs. They will all be wearing white shirts with bright blue writing, and the Orientation Staff will be wearing bright blue shirts with white writing and neon green hats. Look for any of these people for help!

Welcome, Tulane1834. Are you posting here in some sort of official capacity? Are you one of the move in volunteers?

Good job everyone! The move-in part was flawless, with lots of volunteers! Many, many thanks!

My only comments involve the long lines at the Tech help desk and at the fridge pickup, the latter being excruciatingly slow. The workers were definitely on “Island Time,” as I know it. Is there a special name for the “we’ll get to it when we get to it” in New Orleans?

Anyway, it was very well done.

For future reference if you want a microfridge you can order it ahead of time.

http://tulane.edu/studentaffairs/housing/forms/upload/0910microfridgeform.pdf

If you pre order your fridge will be in your room before you are. No lines no waiting.

(that link is from last year, but you get the idea. $30.00 savings too.)

Yesterday was very hot. (Last year move in day was unseasonably cool and dry in the 80’s with low humidity) I hope everyone got moved in alright.

Yesterday was hot, but today is brutal. 108 heat index at 11:00. It was much better last year. But I love where my D is in JL. Near part of the building, like their own little community of six.

“Near” was supposed to be “Neat”. Darned BlackBerries and my fingers.

My D’s room is on the 3rd floor of JL quite near “the deep” so I did walk around a little. It’s like a cool little “neighborhood”. Are those singles as small as they look on paper? I realize that the floor plans may not be to scale, but it appears that they are smaller than the doubles which are pretty tiny!

I can now officially report that they are small!! My D’s room is 13x7, so while decently deep (maybe that is where the name came from?) it is narrow. The closets, which are outside the room, are only 20" or so wide, and that is a tough fit for all the clothes most girls have. But the ceilings are 10’, so that makes it feel a bit more spacious.

The move went well for us except for one nasty garden district resident who felt the need to come up to our car and loudly complain about the fact that he had to wait a couple minutes to turn off of Palmer because of the back-up. His word were “no New Orleanian would do this.” You would think the locals would steer clear of the area on move-in day but maybe they forget. Once we got through that area, the rest of our move-in went very well thanks to all of the comments from people on this site. Got to love BBandB. They had 750 pack and hold orders on Fri and were extremely efficient. Then went to Lowes, and packed everything in Rubbermaid tubs and we were pretty much done.

There were a number of local traffic oddities this weekend. Strange. I got within 6 blocks of the hotel and they had Poydras blocked because of some race?? Took me an hour to go around and get through those 6 blocks. The Saturday night I ran into the same thing(!!!) because of the Saints’ game. Unreal. But I didn’t get out of my car and loudly complain to the Police that no one else would do this, lol.

I have heard from quite a few that this was an extremely smooth move in, and from some veterans at Tulane that it was the best ever. Pretty impressive given the large class.
