Just wanted to know how low the mercury drops. I'm from NY so I'm used to the cold. I prefer to be somewhere not too cold.

If you prefer to be somewhere not too cold... well, that's a red flag right there.
For this year:
September this year varied from 40-75 degrees
October was unusually cold, usually 26-40 degrees
November has been warm, 35-60 degrees
Now that December is setting in we're pretty much guaranteed temperatures below 32 until March— besides an occasional thaw, usually around January.
Until then, highs will vary from 32 to -10, and lows will vary from 15 to -20, unless we get an especially bad shot of polar air, which is becoming unusual (windchills below -60 used to happen more often)...

So it drags on and on but it doesn't start to bother most people until February, at which point spring is close enough to keep morale at a healthy level.

Do the dorms have heating??? If not, how do you keep from turning into a human snowman?

It can get VERY cold in Minnesota, but it is also sunny and bright, which contributes a lot to one's energy level.

In contrast, Syracuse and Rochester are a bit less cold, but they are grey and dreary.

I lived in Fargo, ND for couple of years when I was a kid... So how would you compare Fargo and St. Paul??
I'm from NY also louda87309, what school may i ask?

heating: yes of course.. i'm quite toasty right now. some students have had problems with too much heating, because there tends to be an overestimation due to how heat is rationed (there was an entire student group devoted to working out the intricacies of the heating system). you can always open your window a bit but be careful because pipes have burst.

i'm assuming fargo is windier and more desolate, and on average 5-10 degrees colder than st paul. (not factoring in wind chill)

Fargo is definitely colder than St. Paul.

Accoring to weather.com, the average high / low temperature in January is 23 / 6 in St. Paul, and 16 / -2 in Fargo.

But doesn't Macalester have break for most of January (the coldest month)?

thanks guys. I think i'll handle it. for some reason, i really love Mac
