how colleges will look at the new SAT

After a while, your score just flatten out. Your second testing will improve your score a lot, but after that it's hopeless.

ack, mine goes the other way - cr800 writing 770 math 630 for a combined total of 2200. unfortunately I gave up math two years ago (I'm doing a levels) but will probably have to take a math satII. I'm planning on retaking either the sat1 or the sat2s in november, depending on the sat2 scores (I'll also be doing english lit and french in oct, which should both be 750+) - will my math scores count against me that much?

i got 640 on PSAT writing, and then 510 on the new sat in march. in may i got it up to a 650.

How much will it hurt me that my writing score dropped from a 720 on first testing to a 690 and then a 590?!?!? My CR went up a total of 110 and my M went up a total of 90?

Ive come to the conclusion that the writing score is completely random. I think I wrote a much better essay in October than in March, yet i received a 10 in March and an 8 in October, bringing my writing score from 680 to 660. Since my M + CR = 1500, I am very happy that writing will not count as much.
By the way on the PSAT sophomore year i got 76 M 54 CR 62 WR 192 and junior year 70 M 64 CR 62 W 196, so not much improvement and the same writing score :(

No problem for me. 2340, first sitting.

using act vs sat?? My son has a composite 22 on act, and 490 490 640 ( math, verbal, writing) on sat. My inclination is to use ACT scores as the schools he is applying to are not clear or positive in how much they are looking at writing portion. The act on the sat act comparison chart I found via collegeboard correlates to about a 1030 I think I saw on the ( m& V version of the sat). Am I right to do this? I realize that these scores are not good. But he has pulled a 3.0 at a tough high school and has great recommendations and has shown commitment in certain ways. I hope we do ok with admissions! Any thoghts on which to use are appreciated!

^ It doesnt matter that he's at a tough HS, it matters what his courses are (level of difficulty) and his GPA is really .. not good.

An SAT of 1030 is below the national average I think, Im not sure.. but most likely go to a CC

hey...
i was really confused about an acceptable SAT score.
i have a weird combination of scores.
my total was 1940
verbal-570
maths-710
writing-660(essay 10)
i really dont know what sort of a score it is?
i really want to get into smith college or ne other good liberal arts college.will i be eligible, applying with such a score?

I dont know about Smith but liberal arts kids tend to be stronger in English .. In your case your math score is the highest, your CR is quite low and your writing is OK.. so.

is the SAt score everything.i mean if my transcripts are god..as in if my high school results are good and consistent.a good college essay, a good list of extra curriculam activities then is it possible to compensate the poor SAT scores?

A 710 is outstanding and and a 660 is very good. A 570 is average. You should apply to schools like Skidmore, University of California at Santa Cruz--(beautiful campus) George Washington University, University of Maryland, American University. Go to a Borders Bookshop, look in the college prep section and you will find a large book called something like Americas Best 365 colleges and Universities, by Princeton Review. Sit in the coffee shop and look through each school's stats to find some good targets for yourself and then buy the book and take it home (for good karma....) You will find an excellent school matching your statistics in these books. Good luck and god bless....

Americas Best 365 colleges and universitys by Princeton Review is a great bathroom reader :)

thnx:D
but the problem lies in the fact that i am from bangladesh and unfortunately such books are not available here.
anyways thanx though

Incredibly. The two times I took the SAT II writing, I got 770. Same exact score both time. (That time, I took it over to go for an 800.) But now, with these new SAT writing, I've been getting 710. Same exact score the two times I've taken it so far. :( So I have to say the curve is a lot harder.

Naziba:
Try looking at www.collegeboard.com to find SAT score "matches" for you for different schools. You will find listings of the average scores by college after searching around in the college board website. The only thing I would say is that the College Board score listings seem to be a little bit on the low end, thus meaning you might waste money applying to a school that is more of a stretch for you than you think. Example--- college board lists a 630 as being in the range for Cornell University, but Cornell's actual website Class Profile for Class of 2009 shows that scores below 650 are found among the bottom 30% of admitted students-- meaning that these students must have had some other very special attirbutes such as athletics.

PS I knew many Bangladeshis at The American University in Washington DC. It is a beautiful campus and you would like it very much-- it has a wonderful international affairs department. Good luck and you still have time -- especially with the Common Application being available on line at www.commonapp.org so give it a shot, though you will need to have your scores sent "rush" at this point which is expensive -$25. Also, Smith College ( a prestigious woman's college in a beautiful town with lots of other colleges) in Massachussets seems like a nice choice for you and the application fee is waved if you apply online so go for it!

eh...I don't think the PSAT is too great of a predictor of SAT scores...

(I had a 176 for PSAT and have SAT scores in the 2100+ range)

But then again, it's different for everyone.

Dunno how PSATs got brought up, but my PSAT score was pretty similar to my SAT score, despite the fact that I slept through my PSAT test. -_-

I got 216 on my PSAT (OMG, it was one point off from National Merit. =_= I'm so ****ed at myself for sleeping through the test.) and my test score on my SAT is 2190. :s Pretty similar.

i took the psat in november (im a junior) and got a 216, cr:78, m: 67, w: 71. on my december SAT i got a 2120, cr: 750, m: 690, w: 680. i think im going to take it again in april after some tutoring but my dad says he thinks the score is great. im really unsure of how selective colleges will view it. im interested in top tier schools but i dont know if its worth it to take it again and shoot for straight 7's.

Will the writing section have more of an effect on admissions this year than last because the admissions officers now have experience with the new SAT?

Also, I took the SATII Math 2-C and got an 800. Can that replace my score for the SAT I Math Section?
