I was at UCSD for two days just walking around, and I noticed that many people DON'T ride bikes. I saw a lot of guys riding bikes, and they are all mountain bikes which I thought was weird. Also, I saw one asian girl riding a skateboard and the rest guys riding skateboards too. No girls riding bikes?! The campus is HUGE!

actually i've seen a bunch of girls on bikes and scateboards.
i'm guessing there's less than guys maybe but still, why does it matter?
you can ride a bike regardless, or do you like conforming? haha.

oh nice i can ride my longboard next year? UCI is so nazi about that stuff.

naw just weird because everywhere else i visisted and toured people rode bikes like crazy. Just found it extremely surprising that very few people ride bikes on a HUGE campus. I'm most likely going to UCSD next year, and I'm FOR SURE riding a bike. Beach cruiser baby

As a bike-riding (and longboarding) girl, I'll tell you that we exist. :) I liked to stick to my own campus shortcuts and avoid the crowds -- maybe that's where the rest of the girls are, too.

sweet astrina! whats the difference between a longboard and a regular skateboard. Because the majority of the boarders I saw at SD were longboarders

i prefer longboarding because i'm not into performing tricks, i like the carving motion you do while going down hills (kinda like snowboarding), and above all, you can get a quieter and smoother ride down library walk. :)

if you ever have biochem or organic lab classes in NSB and find the front door propped open, you can literally skateboard your way across the lobby to your classroom door!

a few students at UCSD got me into longboarding. i got a nice board at the swap meet in point loma for 60$. beats a 130$ brand name one.

its a good way of going from class to class plus the wind in ur face feels great

I'll be biking around, but then again, I'm a guy so that doesn't help much.

I hope the campus isn't flooded with fixed geared bikes because some of the people who ride them are total posers who can't control their bikes and end up clogging up bike lanes going slow as heck. But I guess some bike is better than no bike at all.

Road bike elitism. :)

what do you mean girls dont bike!! theres tons!!
youre crazy.....

anyways ive always wanted to learn how to longboard...but i think i would fall off and die lol

i'll teach you when i get there next year haha

nope, mostly mountain bikes on campus. :)

make sure to chain up your road bike real tight, especially if it's one of the nicer models. i had a mediocre [mountain] bike cable-locked outside NSB and went home for the weekend, was gone by the time i got back. make sure you get a U-lock of decent strength. or you could always opt for this crazy thing that goes on my bike now: Amazon.com: Kryptonite New York Fahgettaboudit - 3'3" Chain and Lock: Sports & Outdoors

can't beat 8 1/2 pounds of security!

Mmm. I have a Kryptonite New York U-Lock. Not as crazy as yours but still plenty crazy enough unless someone has hydraulic tools.

Is there enough space in the dorm room for two bikes? I have a nice road bike and a pieced-out crappy road bike. Nice for group rides and crappy for commuting. If not, is there a secure place to store bikes in Muir or do they only have bike racks?

do people at UCSD ride mountain bikes because of those hills and slopes?

unless you live in an apartment, i wouldn't recommend putting two bikes inside (not enough room). the bike racks are pretty reliable as long as they're in a high-traffic area.

i got my mountain bikes because a) it was all they had at target/costco and b) i bought the second one from a friend, who presumably got them from a big-box store too. there are some hills around UCSD (climbing back from warren to marshall comes to mind), but nothing impossible.

some bikes cost less than that lock

I plan to be a future-UCSD-female-bike-rider. Proud of it too!

it surprised me too. all I saw were guys on mountain bikes actually wearing helmets! but then again, its not a typical school day...

unless i really brush up on my skateboarding skills (bad at turns) i think i'll pretty much need one. ERC is so far away from everything!!

if those helmet-donning folks were also wearing navy blue polos, they were probably our campus security people. most people don't wear a helmet around campus unless they're commuters.

class of 2012 lets bring in them beach cruisers
