How common is it for colleges to get bands to come and play for them?

I've heard of some colleges doing this, but I don't know how common it is/ if most colleges do it, or only some. Also, by bands I mean bands/ singers that I've heard of.

It’s not uncommon, but I’m not able to tell you what percentage of colleges do this. I know Colby invites artists relatively often (Modest Mouse and another band—maybe 311—played shows a couple years ago), USF got The Killers to play a couple years ago, my college got Das Racist to play this year and Reel Big Fish to play on Halloween last year.

I think it’s pretty common. My school got Nelly to play last Spring and Weezer and Ben Folds the year before. We’re getting Mac Miller this month.

Not the bands I’d like, but I’m pretty sure we won’t be hosting The Dillinger Escape Plan in our football stadium any time soon (and I have no problem with that… small intimate venues > giant arenas).

Its pretty common at FAMU. Back in 2006 we had Lil Wayne perform. Last year for homecoming we had DJ Khaled and somebody else. Can’t remember as I didn’t stay for the whole thing. Not sure who were having this year.

i saw passion pit here at uc davis last year, cake is coming in october - i’d love to see them but i’m seeing tiesto play here a few days before. definitely very common in bigger schools

Lots of fairly famous people come to Madison, though it’s not really organized by the school, they just come to venues near campus. I’m seeing Tiesto tomorrow and last year I saw Deadmau5, Skrillex, Rusko, Avicii, Bassnectar, Wolfgang Gartner, and lots of other people.

I’m pretty sure non-EDM artists come to Madison too (I know Wiz was here last year), but that’s all I really focus on so that’s all I really know about it.

Rutgers has a “Rutgers Fest” every year where they have alot of singers. It got cancelled for next year though because there was like 3 shootings last year. lol

Pretty fairly often I’d say, but it’d depend how big your school is for the bigger artists. We’ve had Wiz Khalifa and Mac Miller come here for a frat concert, T-Pain, Citizen Cope, Taylor Swift, and Lupe Fiasco and GirlTalk are coming this month. Then there are a lot of lesser heard of bands like the Velcro Pygmies and The Civil Wars who’ve came in the past couple years. Either way, I’m sure you could request some or petition it to your university programming council or somethin.

The bigger your school the more likely celebs will come there. Coca-Cola especially whores themselves out on my campus by organizing various “free concerts” and bringing around a tour bus filled with console games.

^Lucky, we’re a Pepsi school. Means we get Mountain Dew and Dr. Pepper but no Vanilla Coke :(

^I would say that’s a plus. :P

The music scene in my city (Portland) is also excellent, so I don’t really care much about shows on campus. Ziggy Marley and OFWGKTA are playing October 1st and 2nd. ^_^

DC’s music scene is okay. Mastodon and TDEP coming in November :D

Nice! Veil of Maya and Misery Signals are also playing early October. :D
