How common is it to bring a desktop to college?

I plan to bring a relatively large desktop and a 25.5 inch monitor to my dorm. (The monitor will also play the role of a TV) Will this work out?

It should be fine. Here’s what my setup looks like.

@arklogic omg THANK YOU! I was fretting so much over losing my rig when I go to college because its my baby, but your pic makes me soo happy since you have an antec 1200 also!
I figured that my speaker set up would have to stay at home and I would have to rely on my headset, but it seems like you have some little ones, no?
Also, is the fan noise problematic for your roommates or anything when they are trying to sleep? Well I guess the case is actually really quiet but my 4850 sounds like a jet which means no late night pwn
Also, it looks like that setup is in a single or double but since I run a high chance of getting a triple is it still going to be ok?

arklogic, that’s insane, a full tower, dual monitors, and a netbook. Nice red target for thieves.

i have my desktop in my room it does not take up that much space. I had this computer since i entered high school for my birthday so i could not get rid of it for a laptop. I had a laptop but prefer desktops.

I have a speaker system set up (speakers and subwoofer under the bed), which works VERY well. This room IS a double, which i why it’s so roomy (I imagine it’d be a little more cramped in a triple but not undoable). The fan noise is not a problem. As you probably know, the Antec 1200 has speed knobs for every fan. I keep them all on low and my case is running 24/7 - not very noisy at all. I have a GTX275, which is louder than a 4850 and it’s totally fine.

I live in a relatively “antisocial” building where people don’t really keep their doors open. If it were that way I wouldn’t risk bring all my stuff here!

Since you put it that way, just cram some GTX 480s in there then :).

How common is it to bring a monitor to college? I suppose it would be a lot easier to bring compared to a TV, better resolution, and give a better view when using your laptop in your dorm. Thoughts?

I don’t think it’s very easy to break into the dorms at UCLA. All the doors lock automatically and it’s all card key access. But obviously leaving the door open when there’s nobody inside changes everything.

And the double does help. I’m in a triple right now and my desk is under the bunk bed, with the drawers separate. My tower has to sit on the desk, and my keyboard is too, for convenience. There definitely isn’t space for multiple monitors.

@TheReach: Ah, nVidia lost me with this generation. I’m so going with a 5850 once the prices drop :(

@ThisCouldBeHeavn: Pretty much the case in most UC dorms I’ve seen. In fact, the only multi-monitor setup I’ve seen in a dorm was with two 19" ones.

Once you get an apartment though and have the room and money, consider investing in a dual monitor setup. I had dual 24", and I absolutely loved it. It was amazing for multitasking, but unfortunately I had to sell the second monitor to fund another hobby, photography (which is a another story).
