How common is it to get out of taking foreign language at Stanford?

My S took 4 years of Spanish in HS, and is going to be taking the proficiency tests, written and oral. If he does well enough on them, will he have to take more foreign language at Stanford?

Does anyone know the percentage of kids who get out of taking foreign language?

My D took 4 years of German in HS and placed out of the first year of German with the placement test. The German course at her school wasn't very strong, but she is a good student. So she doesn't have to take any language if she doesn't want to, and she doesn't get any credit.

My son took 3 years of Spanish and will be taking Spanish 2 at our local community college. Stanford said that would satisfy the language requirement.

why does everyone want to get out of taking a language?? I'd think it would be quite fun learning languages in university.

Does your son have AP credit for a language? If he got a 4 or a 5, I think he can get out of it. Here are some other ways:

Ambitiousteen, some students are focused on taking their engineering or pre-med courses and don't have the time for foreign language. Others simply have no interest in it.

Thanks, everybody! My S would prefer not to take more language if he doesn't need to; he will be in engineering and is very excited about taking many other courses. He was wondering if most people who took 4 years in HS could do well enough on the placement test to fulfill the requirement. It sounds like some do.

His HS school doesn't offer any AP language courses, and with all of the other AP work he was doing, he didn't have time to self-study for the extra info he would have needed to get the 4 or 5 on the exam.

Well.. in my case i would kind of benefit from it... I'd like to be fluent in many languages even if i am pre-med... i think a person would benefit from it... your opportunities would be endless and as a future physician, patient care/comfort can be obtained simply by speaking in their tongue...

That is just me... i like learning languages... not for the grade though so i see your point...

hey FresnoMom. i hope u dont mind me asking this: how did ur child ask Stanford if that course was okay for credit (what is the process), and will that one course satisfy the entire foreign lang requirement at Stanford? Thank you.

My son contacted the Stanford Language Center (patricia@stanford.edu) .

The course my son is taking is Spanish 2. SLC said that it was the same as their SPANLANG 2A (which fulfills the requirement).

Hope that helps!

hey FresnoMom. I really appreciate your help. Sorry, one last question: is your son taking the course this summer or when? thanks again, really
