How competative is UW honors?

I'm currently using UW as my only safety school (applying to very competative, top 10 schools). I am applying to honors and am wondering the likelihood of getting in (as I may end up going here due to the fickle nature of Ivy League schools and their equivalents).

GPA: 4.0 UW (full IB)
SAT: 2340
ACT: 34
Rank: 1/475

EC's: Decent but not amazing (3 varsity sports, tennis captain, all-league tennis, a few clubs)

I am in-state and white.

I hear the honors program is heavily dependent on the essay’s

hmmmm dang I don’t really want to spend much time on those…

You won’t have any problem getting into honors @ UW. I will be surprised if you didn’t get into one of those top 10 schools.

UW honors acceptance is heavily dependent on essays and recommendations once you have grades and test scores that qualify you. I don’t mean to discourage you, but UW honors does reject people with perfect grades and scores who don’t write convincing essays (They did this to several people from my high school). In the words of one of the professors in UW Honors Admissions, “Once you have perfect grades and scores, the essays can only hurt you.” Are you qualified for UW Honors? Definitely. Are you more qualified than the other people applying to the honors program? That mostly depends on your essays and recs.

*competitive

Good luck with those top 10 schools.

Wow, I just realized how difficult it is to answer the UW Honors essay prompts. I’m going to have a lot of trouble writing those, and I really don’t know if it is worth the effort, as I probably will not end up attending UW.

Does anyone think it would help chances to apply earlier? Or do you think everyone would have an equal chance, no matter WHEN an application was sent?

My advice: don’t bother with honors, especially if you have a ton of AP credit. Do departmental honors if you decide to attend UW, but core honors won’t make a lick of difference if you intend to go to grad. school. But if you do end up choosing UW, there’s one chance to apply after admission if you’re dying to do it.
