How competetive will it be this year?

I applied with a

3.3uw gpa
2160(1430) SAT
Decent Ecs here and there
great Recs and essays

I just wanted to know if maryland will be super competetive like other big state schools have been this year. I applied to PSU thinking I could get into University Park but I got deferred to a second choice campus. Will it eb this bad at UMD this year? I'm getting really worried...UMD is a top choice for me. =/

Hm :/. That sucks. Are you a Pennsylvania or Maryland resident? I would say you have a good chance of being admitted to Spring semester, not Fall, if you are not a Maryland resident.

I think that PSU and UMD are pretty comparable academically and admissions-wise. Even if you're a Maryland resident you might face Spring admit.

In any case I don't think you would be rejected outright if you are taking a tough courseload. Your SAT scores are really good. Also, since admissions are somewhat of a crapshoot, you could be deferred from PSU and then admitted to UMD. But like I said, I think they are pretty comparable schools. So you have reason to be worried. Just keep focusing on your grades and see where it goes. If you did well this year, consider submitting a midyear report even though they don't request it.

Good luck. Maryland is a great school, I hope you get in...

I am a jersey resident. :(

but my brother goes to UMD if that counts for anything.

Do you think it's a good idea for me to write them a letter converying my sincere interest in the school? Also can I just send in a copy of my 1st quarter report card instead of a mid-year report? I didn't do too well 2nd quarter, but my first quarter grades are stellar. =/

sagarmatha: My daughter is waiting to hear from UMD, although it is not a top choice. Ironically, we ARE Pennsylvania residents, but she had no interest in Penn State since it is so rural. We do live close to one of the satelite campuses, Abington, which is really pretty and feeds into Main campus after two years. I also had a boarder with us from Texas who went there for two years, then transferred, and loved the whole experience. If you do decide to go this route, we are on the list of off campus housing options for Penn State-Abington. Close to a train station and 20 minutes into Philadelphia. BUT: do hope you make it into UMD since you really want to go there!!

Thanks caruth.

I'm hoping I have a better chance at UMD since PSU is completely a numbers games and they weigh gpa(weighted) heavily. Atleast UMD takes somewhat of a holistic approach to their decisions.

im also waiting for news from cp...here are my stats:

asian male instate
3.42 unweighted 4.17 weighted GPA
1980 sat (1410 CR and M)
Varsity Wrestling, Varsity Cross Country and a few random things
reccs are okay, good at best and essay is good at best

3.4-3.5 UW GPA
1960 SAT (1320 CR/M)
Eagle Scout (lots of community service)
Varsity Sport, Part Time job
Other Random ECs
Decent ECs, pretty good essay
oh yeah, i forgot NERVOUS

getting into PSU was much easier than getting into UMD last year. Much. I don't know anyone that did not get into PSU university park and got into College park. I know many, many people that got into PSU but not UMD. Maybe PSU upped their standards this year. I haven't been paying much attention.

Pretty much you should have a 90 average and above a 1950 SAT score and you'll get in. Does anyone have Naviance? Check there to see what I'm talking about.

yeah but in my case...can good sat scores make up for a below average gpa?

What is a 3.3 number wise? Like is it an 85? I'd say for every school in the country, GPA counts more than SAT, and they should be pretty much even. It's better to have a high GPA and low SAT then the other way around b/c then they'll know you worked hard for 4 years, instead of the SAT, which is about 4 hours.

3.3 is kinda low but sat is pretty good, i think ur in

a 3.3 is an 88

In my opinion, you'll get in. You have a high SAT score, good essay, recs, etc. I just hope that you took AP and honors courses, and that is why your GPA is an 88.

yeah..by graduation I will have a total of 10 weighted courses including 5 APs

You're fine...don't worry about it then.
