How competitive is computer science/engineering?

I heard admission to CSE essentially requires a 4.0 in the prereqs and that almost everyone in there is some kind of genius kid compared to the more relaxed programs at western/wsu.

It is really competitive, but you have much better opportunities than wsu (which is in the middle of nowhere), and uw is just better in general

I had a 4.0 in both the prereq CSE classes and was declined. Granted my essay was extremely rushed, and there were some other factors that went into it (that I won’t go into) but overall, it is VERY competitive.

What do you value more? Getting in or your hair?

4.0? Not sure about requirements now, but some of the TAs in CSE 142/143 I know got in with 3.8s. Yes, grades are very important, but you’ll also have a written portion of your admissions application into the major. Show your passion there.

Here is some more information on how the application review goes about:

When you apply to UW, list CS or CE (whichever you are planning on pursuing, or even both) as your intended majors. This will AUTOMATICALLY add you into the ‘potential freshman direct admit’ pool of all the freshmen applicants once your general UW application has been approved and you are accepted by UW. They look for applicants who show a lot of potential in the field (no programming experience necessary!) as well as those who have worked on personal projects or interned at companies already. I believe for the freshman class of 2014, over 900 applied CS/CE and they took around 30 freshmen. There are about 160 students total in each graduating class.

tl;dr: UW CSE department is difficult to get in and the caliber is high. This doesn’t mean you should just give up and go to WSU. Click on the links for more information about admissions. Consider applying direct admit.
