How competitive is computer science major?

I was wondering if anyone had any information on how difficult is it to transfer to Cal Poly as a computer science major. I know Comp Sci is fairly competitive at Cal Poly, but I’m not sure how competitive it is compared to let’s say Mechanical Engineering.
Does anyone have any sort of stats on the transfer acceptance rate for the comp sci major ?

@ZedtheDead last year they had 15 transfer spots open in CS for over 500 transfer applicants —very difficult. You may try Software Engineering instead as they had 10 transfer spots open and only 70 transfer applicants–very similar major to CS. Good Luck – it is a fantastic program!

As @Dadfan stated, the SLO projections for 2016-2017 for CS show 15 spots for 554 applicants. They usually accept 3x the actually enrolled, so 45 admits with 554 applications gives you a 8% acceptance rate.

@Gumbymom I’ve always wondered. Do these numbers reflect only the number of people who have finished all their requirements ( classes, GPA, gen eds…etc) and are actually 100% viable for transfer? Or do they reflect the entire applicants pool, even students who have not yet finished neither their reqs. nor have a sufficiently high enough GPA and are just applying to see if they would get lucky? Since i know a couple of those students myself

I cannot answer your question about any of the specifics. To me it looks like the total # of applicants, regardless if you have met all the requirements or not. But the bottom line is that they only have spots for 15 enrolled transfers, so low odds any way you look at it.

I transfered in this year as a CS major and there were around 20~ people in my orientation group. When talking to the students there most I asked had a 3.8 ++ gpa and the lowest I heard from was a 3.5. So probably have a decent shot if your gpa is near there and you have all the prereqs finished.
