I’m planning on Electronic Materials Engineering as my 1st choice major on my freshman app this year. How hard is it to get into engineering generally? my friend had a 3.3 UW (3.6 W GPA) and a 2100 SAT and he got into chemical engineering last year. i have a 3.2 UW (3.52 W) and a 2070 SAT (retaking) + over 900 comm service hours and whole bunch of other ECs. Could someone post their experience with getting into UC davis’s engineering program? i know that biomedical engineering is really REALLY competitive, but what about the other “lesser known” majors like electronic materials engineering? thanks! :)

There is no unit of measure for competitiveness of academic programs, I’m afraid. If you’re looking for statistics about this program, you might try contacting the CHMS department’s undergraduate advisor and asking her what sort of information she has publicly available:
Kate Shasky
kpshasky@ucdavis.edu/email 752-2504

FWIW - in 2010, I had 3.9 UC Weighted, 2130 SAT (800 math). Not much ECs.
3 APs (but all in senior year so wouldn’t have been counted):
waitlisted at Davis (eventually got in), in at Santa Barbara and Irvine, rejected at
Cal Poly SLO and higher UCs. Mechanical Engineering.

Does davis’s engineering program admit based on the specific engineering area or as an overall engineering major? For example, if electronic materials engineering has less applicants than mechanical engineering, will people have a better chance of getting into electronic materials engineering than mechanical engineering? Thanks again!
