Hello,
I was wondering, how competitive is Harvard wrestling? Do you need to be a state champ to be recruited? Will trying to be recruited harm your application? What if you are stronger at academics than sports, but still enjoy wrestling and would like to try to be recruited will it help your application?
Thanks

If you are interested in playing a DI sport, either as a recruit or a walk-on, you need to register with the: [NCAA Eligibility Center](http://web1.ncaa.org/ECWR2/NCAA_EMS/NCAA.jsp).

If you are stronger in academics than wrestling, it might be best if you tried to walk-on to a team after being admitted to a college. Harvard’s wrestling team was in middle of the pack last year in Ivy Standings: [2012-13 Wrestling Standings - Ivy League](http://www.ivyleaguesports.com/sports/wrest/2012-13/standings)

Also, checked out:

Would it give me an edge to try to be recruited? I would apply and walk on either way, but would it help my app?
Thanks for the help

Yes, it would help your chances to be a wrestling recruit, but to be recruited you must:

Register with the NCAA Eligibility Center

Contact the head coach

Send him your stats and film

Attend a showcase where the coaches can see you wrestle

Be invited for an “official visit” at Harvard’s expense to participate in an “unofficial practice” led by the team captains.

The coach then needs to commit to using one of his allotted “slots” from Admissions on you.

All of that relationship building occurs during an athlete’s junior year in high school and during the summer between their junior and senior year, as recruited athletes generally commit to a school during the SCEA round.

Are you ready for that? Are you on schedule to do that? Do you have the wrestling talent to be noticed and have the coaches use one of their slots for you?

If not, your only choice is to try to walk-on after being admitted. You do that by being admitted just like everyone else – through your transcript, test scores, essays and teacher recs. By all means put wrestling down on your EC list, but wrestling will then be just like any other EC – music, dance, theater, debate etc. It won’t help you get admitted, as the coaches will not have seen you wrestle, but the Admissions office will note it as something you enjoy to do.

check out gocrimson.com and read about the team and the wrestler’s bios. It’s a good place to start. Good luck.
