How competitive is HKUST engineering? Also, is Purdue better?

I just got accepted to HKUST for engineering with a 85% conditional in ISC. (India)

Honestly, I was a bit surprised because HKUST is very well ranked globally. As far as I remember, it is even ranked higher than Cornell for Computer Science.

That makes me wonder, shouldn't a well ranked college be more competitive and tougher to get into? Any Honk Kong students out there? Is HKUST easier for you guys or tougher?

Also, most of my friends who applied for HKUST engineering have also got their acceptances. Anyone knows any rejects? Does HKUST publish its acceptance rate?

I am simply curious as to where HKUST stands in term of prestige. How does it compare to HKU, NUS and the IITs.

And one last thing, which university would you choose for engineering - HKUST or Purdue?

Thanks.

@garg - Congratulations!! :D

Both HKUST & Purdue are good colleges for engineering.

HKUST has a brilliant campus and academic ranking wise it is at the top. I’d say go to HKUST if money’s an issue, you want to do masters straight out of college(seniors say that getting good jobs globally is an issue), don’t have issues with the Chinese culture, etc.

Purdue on the other hand is well reputed. If money’s not an issue and you want to have your options open - Purdue is the better option.

In the end it comes down to you reading up on both colleges and seeing which fits your future goals best and at which college you would fit in easily!! :D

About the large no. of acceptances - Hong Kong universities have recently been on a drive to increase the no. of International students on campus. Also as their admission decisions are based solely upon academic criteria - most Indian students are bound to be accepted!! :D

I’d say IITs & NUS are better options than HKUST. HKU as such is better ranked for certain subjects than HKUST. But both face the same problems of International repute.

Note that I’m just another applicant - sharing what I’ve learned from different sources, so I might be wrong.

Anyway - when did you submit your application & when did you receive your offer?? Also I think HKUST requires you to inform them of your decision within 2 weeks doesn’t it??

Hey gaurav, I’m from India too and applied under the regular round but haven’t heard from them yet. You applied under the regular round thing?
Just out of curiosity, what was you 10th boards overall percentage just so I have an idea.

Thanks

Rishav17 - I applied on Dec 15. (regular) and got my offer on Jan 21.
Yes, you have to confirm your decision within two weeks and pay a deposit of 20,000 HKD.

horrace95 - I got about 91% overall in ICSE.

I think HKUST would be a better choice than Purdue. Purdue is far more expensive and ranked lower globally. Anyways, am still waiting for my other US results.
