How competitive is LSA's Honors Program?

Title says it all. Thanks!

Do you mean getting into it, or being a student in the program? Either way, I don’t think it’s that competitive. I’m not sure of the exact stats, but I don’t think it’s all that difficult to be accepted into the program. And once you’re in, there’s really not a competitive atmosphere or anything. There’s another thread right now that’s discussing the pros and cons of being in honors, by the way.

Typically, honors students graduate at the top of their high school class and have 3.9-4.0 unweighed GPAs. The minimum SAT for consideration is 1400 (CR + M only) and the average ACT score of 33 and SAT over 1460 (CR + M only).

As such, the quality of the students enrolled in the Honors college is slightly higher than that of the average LSA student. However, I don’t think it can be described a s"competitive". Any student with the credentials stands a decent chance of getting admitted.

From the LSA Honors website, Q&A section for prospective students:

How many applications do you receive?

Last year, approximately 1500 students applied to Honors. We expect about the same number of applications this year.

__

What is the size of the incoming class?

500 students is our target for the incoming class.

__

So, ~33%. Given that the applicant pool is the top of the incoming class, this number indicates that the honors program is relatively competitive. Anecdotally, I know a number of people who were rejected.

To be clear on the numbers:

Last Year:

29,965 Applied
15,000 Offered Admission
6,150 Enrolled
1,500 Applied to Honors (24% of the Enrolled Pool)
500 Accepted to Honors (8% of the Enrolled Pool)

Generally, the program likes to state that they pull their honors applicants from the to 10% of the total admitted class. That statement would agree with vinceh’s numbers, as the invitation to apply to honors comes very quickly after admission is offered, not after enrollment is confirmed.

Someone from my school told me that 1 out of 11 LSA students is in the honors program, which seems reasonable. Go for it if you want to!
