How competitive is Pepperdine?

The acceptance rate is really low, ~28%.....So I'm wondering what is an acceptable uw gpa and sat scores to have a good shot at Pepperdine.

I know reccomendations and essays are really important, but I just want to know about the academic side.

Thanks

Hi, ummm did some research last year for my D. Here is the link to peperdine's common data report. It is not this year's but pgs 8,9,10 should be useful for you. http://www.pepperdine.edu/instres/dataset/CDSFORWEB.pdf
She did attend this year and is very happy. Some things I believe after going through the process and meeting other students is that gpa is important, essays and especially recommendations are a great influence, especially if you have a strong personal reference from a pastor or minister. Church related ec look good too. They are building their athletics too, but have limited sports, so they are looking for specific athletes. And last, if you belong to Church of Christ there is some advantage. My D was not Church of Christ and was placed on the waitlist, her stats were much stronger than several of her new friends who are Church of Christ who attend Pdine. She was fortunate to be picked from the waitlist, which I believe was due to very strong and reputable recommendations.
Again she loves it, finds it somewhat challenging, but still plenty of time for social life. Enjoys the small community feeling.
Good luck!

Thanks for the link. I recently visited Pepperdine and I loved it. Any uncertainties I had about the school were quickly diminished after a quick tour and having a conversation with some students and counselors.

I'm only a junior so I have time to improve my grades, but my schedule is very tough this year as I have 3 ap's, 2 honors, and journalism. My gpa uw will probably be around a 3.5, which is below their average. I'm taking the most difficult schedule my school has to offer, so I'm hoping that will benefit me.

I'm hoping I can score in the 50-75 percentile range on my sat scores as well.

I'm not affiliated with the church of christ so I hope that doesn't wreck my chances.

I play tennis and I am in a volleyball club, and I want to play club volleyball, but I would have no chance to play on their D1 teams, however.

I'm sure I will have 1 amazing academic reccomendation, but I don't know where I can find a great personal one.

As for my essays, I'm hoping they will go in my favor. I'm focusing on Relay 4 Life as my mom and brother both have cancer.

Thanks again, and if you have any other tips I will greatly appreciate them....

Not being affiliated with the Church of Christ will not wreck your chances -- but it would be helpful if you were to show a religious orientation that the school is comfortable with (generally speaking, conservative protestant) as well as strong character.

My tip is that I know Pepperdine is very easy to fall in love with, and it's a fine school. But it's Church of Christ affiliation does mean that its student life is somewhat different than other, more secular schools. Just as one example, they only recently (last few years) lifted the dancing ban. It's one of those schools that I urge students to fully get to know before attending, as fit is very important.

On that note, you really do need to think hard about your personal reference to make sure it reflects your character and a good fit. If you have a good relationship with your minister/pastor that would be the best choice.

Your esssay topics sound good, though I know that you would much rather NOT have these things to write about. Apart from college applications, please accept my best wishes and hopes that both your mother and brother recover fully.

thanks for you help

i think that the rules are portrayed a little strict by the people on cc. from what i heard from students and the admission counselor people of the opposite sex can be in the lobby whenever, it's just that by 2am there shouldn't be anyone of the opposite of sex in the actual dorms, so other roomates aren't disrupted.

i really don't think it is as strict as you say. i read a story how 1 out of 4 pepperdine students are binge drinkers (drink 5 or more consecutive drinks regularly), and although that is below the national avg. it shows that the students still party and the rules aren't as strict as they could be.

well anyways, i think pepperdine is a good fit, but i'm not 100% sure bc it is unlike any other schools i like (umiami, ucsb, sdsu, florida, indiana).....but i still like it and it is definately a place i could see myself at.

thanks again

You're very welcome and best of luck.

Actually, according to a recent story in the Pepperdine student newspaper, the second largest religious affiliation on campus after C of C is Roman Catholic. I believe that recommendations from ministers or priests and church oriented community service are given great weight in admissions. I'm sure you already know that the school is somewhat conservative politically, and that although Malibu is beautiful, it's not much of a college town. (Full of shops that sell $200 t-shirts to the wealthy, but the one movie theatre burned down a couple of years ago, and hasn't yet reopened.)

Good luck!

My D has had a very healthy social life since transferring to Pdine this year, lots of parties off campus, alcohol present at most, but no pressure.
It is true that Catholics are well represented. Any religious affiliation is a plus for the application.
True, not much in Malibu, except plenty of beaches, but plenty nearby in Santa Monica and in the valley (both about 20 minutes away). If no car, many other students provide rides. Sororities and Frats also provide social events on and off campus.
