I am a classical voice student interested in applying to Steinhardt (undergraduate). I was wondering how difficult (or easy) admission is compared to conservatories (i.e., Curtis, Mannes, Manhattan School of Music, NEC). Any other insights about the voice program at NYU will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. :)

I think Steinhardt is generally easier to get into than the conservatories you mention (Curtis is insanely difficult). My D originally applied to Steinhardt as her New York back-up to MSM, where she really wanted to go early on. As it turns out, she didn't get into MSM and is very happy with the result. Of the schools she applied to, just judging from the quality of her peers practicing around the time of her auditions, the quality of applicants to Steinhardt seemed comparable to those at Northwestern and Rice -- but those two schools are very difficult to get into because of the higher academic standards of the university admissions.

I'm afraid I don't know much at all about the voice program. My D's going to Steinhardt in violin performance and we were really sold on the diverse performance opportunities arising from collaboration within the university and relationships the school has with the professional music scene in the city. Steinhardt, with its collaboration with Tisch film and musical theatre and its own film scoring program, its large number of student chamber and jazz ensembles, and its proximity to the new music scene in New York gives instrumentalists plenty of opportunities to perform, especially in their junior and senior years.

That's another thing that impressed us about Steinhardt. Classical performance at NYU is not oriented to place students on a track toward non-existent orchestral positions, but to help them find and create musical performance opportunities. It struck me as very grounded in the real world and very personalized to the student. I would think the same philosophy applies to voice.

Thank you so much, hkstrpd. ^^

I'm aware of conservatories being competitive and was wondering where I should apply to as back-ups. I'd like to go to school in NY if possible & I wanted to consider NYU because it's so famous.

Do you know if changing majors (from Steinhardt to CAS) is possible at any time between freshman and senior year? If not, is it easy/difficult to double major or minor?

lafraise -

Steinhardt MPAP students have to take the same general liberal arts courses in their freshman and sophomore years as CAS students. But I don't know how transferrable MPAP courses in music theory, music history, performance, etc. would be to other major requirements -- I'd think they pretty much wouldn't be.

Double majors are possible, but I imagine like with double major programs at Oberlin, Bard and NEC/Tufts, doing a double major with music performance means 5 years, at least. Performance obligations are pretty demanding of time. Maybe with voice, not as much -- I don't know -- but for instrumentalists orchestras, chamber groups, and individual practice adds up to lots of time.

Minors are encouraged by MPAP and is something my D is looking at. One strong possibility for her is Record Producing in Tisch, but even then she will need to do one or two of those short Summer Sessions to make it work. She's also interested in Journalism in CAS, but has't really looked at that closely to try to see how it would work.
