Topic (10 Chars)

Having talked to the person who created it, my understanding is that it's very competitive. I met a student who turned down Duke for it.

Oh wow. I just recently got admitted with the Alonzo scholarship (10k per year) and I'm a finalist for the Cornell. The weekend I have to go is in a month, and I'm very nervous but also very excited!

And I might have to turn down Duke (if I get in anyways lol) and all the other schools I applied to if I get this!

How did you find out about your admission decision? ED?

I'm still waiting... my stats and extra currics should be... a lock for cornell but I haven't heard a word from Rollins.

I applied RD around Jan. 1st. They just sent me a letter on Feb. 1st. It was really unexpected. I got everything with admission, and scholarship stuff all at once in the same package. I'm not sure what the exact timeline was for sending this stuff out, so I may have gotten mine a little early. Best of luck to you!

I Don't want to sound cocky, but I'm pretty ****ed off I didn't get invited to Cornell. My stats were fine and everything. Now I'm considering rollins a lot less, especially since I'm doing music.

Oh well, you win some and lose some...

Bahhhh I got my acceptance letter today with about 18k in merit aid and an invitation to compete in the Dean's scholarship competition which is another 10k a year, which would leave more than 10k a year to pay.

I also got accepted into the 3/2 program.

At this point I don't really want to go there, because I just got accepted to UCF's music school's new jazz studies major which has some world renowned faculty that I want to study with... and I'd get paid a lot more to go there.

But anyway, best of luck everyone. If anyone is doing the dean's scholarship competition, I'll be there because my parents are making me.

Visrale,
Congratulations on your merit aid.
What will you have to do to compete for the Dean's Scholarship?

I think I have to show up to the college (not hard, I live about 30 minutes away) then their is a series of interviews and get to know you things. It says 70 percent of the finalists get it, so I'm sure it's not the most cut-throat thing ever.

I find out if I get this (or the Dean's) scholarship on March 12th according to the email I just received. The scholarship weekend was VERY nerve-wracking. It was hard to be all nice to the other kids when they were my direct competition. Too bad the professors and committee were watching us 24/7, so we all had to be on our best behavior. If I get either of these scholarships, Rollins is looking like my #1 choice, even though I would rather go to Yale or Dartmouth (still waiting on those of course). This month is going to be killer.

Oh, on a lesser note I saw this girl from my first-grade class from when I lived up north there. It was so weird that we were both there, thinking about SWIMMING there too lol.

Did everybody get the decision delay email today?

I did...I'm so nervous to find out what I get lol. I need at least the Dean's to even consider going to Rollins >.>

S just got an invitation to the Dean's Scholarship competition. Rollins is his first choice college, and he will need merit aid to go.
Any suggestions?

There's a separate competition for the Dean's Scholarship?

Well, I would say for your S to stay relaxed, but don't be afraid to talk to the professors there. If it is anything like the Cornell competition was, the professors and other judging people seem to be around the students at all times. They were with us at lunch, dinner, and obviously the class discussion and interviews. It seemed to be important to speak out on what you are passionate about. And don't go in with your final major in mind, Rollins strongly encourages interdisciplinary curriculum and doesn't have their students decide final majors until sophomore year. It's good to have an interest(s), but it is better to be open to several different options. They also watch how you interact with other finalists.

Oh, and I got my scholarship package in the mail today from Rollins, and though I didn't get the full ride, I still received $32,500 per year (including Bright Futures and FRAG). I'm pretty excited!

ehswimming
CONGRATULATIONS!
Thanks for all of the info, too.
What is FRAG and what were the other scholarships that you got beside Bright Futures?
I can not tell you how THRILLED I would be if S got that kind of package! That would make Rollins very possible for him.
What other options are you considering, and how do you rank them in terms of where you may go?

FRAG= Florida Resident Access Grant. If your son has one year's residence in Florida, he qualifies for ~$3000 per year for any private institution in Florida

I have full Bright Futures which is ~$4200 per year.

I originally had only $10,000 per year from Rollins itself in the Alonzo scholarship. The package that I got today increased my Alonzo by $5,000 per year, and I got a $10,000 Dean's scholarship. That's $100k from Rollins. From what I understand, to alleviate OOS not receiving Bright Futures/FRAG, the Dean's is $15k for them per year.

Right now, Rollins is the only school I have been accepted to. I am still waiting on UF, Yale, Princeton, Dartmouth, Duke, and Johns Hopkins. I would still like to go to any of the OOS schools I applied to over Rollins, but I won't get any aid from any of them, so most likely I will end up going to Rollins. My parents are only willing to commit $12k per year, so making up a $33k difference for any of them is extremely hard to justify when I have that much in scholarship at a still very good school.

Has your S visited Rollins at all? I do have to say, I was skeptical about how I would like it, but after visiting it, it leaves my other financially feasible option, UF, all but left out of my college search.

S and I were at a youth conference in Orlando earlier this year, and while there, coincidentally met a Rollins administrator, who invited us to visit Rollins. S and I visited it, and he fell in love with it. It's now his first choice, but definintely will need really good merit aid to afford it as he has OK alternatives that would be free or very cheap, and we're middle class, but not rich!

Did your S go to the scholarship competition this weekend? I went Friday night for an overnight visit for swimming, and the coach was telling me about some recruits coming in for a scholarship competition this weekend. Rollins is really good about giving out merit aid (hence less fin. aid and less athletic scholarships) so your son has a very good shot at making Rollins a financial reality.

Let us know how your son does! :)

Thanks for asking. S was at Rollins Friday for an interview for the Dean's Scholarship, and seems to have had a wonderful time. He feels like his interview went well, and he enjoyed very much the class he sat in on. He also had lunch with a student who was extremely active in community service, S's favorite activity. S liked everything including the couple of other students whom he met Friday who also were interviewing for the Dean's Scholarship.

Rollins remains his first choice. We are, however, still worried about the money because even if he gets the Dean's Scholarship and some financial aid, Rollins still would be way over our budget.

I did the dean's scholarship thing this weekend. Overall it was a good experienced and caused Rollins to grow on me a lot more. Probably more importantly, it made me realize that I HAVE to go to a smaller school. I want to go to a place where everybody knows everybody and professors interact with the students.

I don't know how to say this without sounding pretentious, but after meeting the other kids there for the Dean's scholarship, I felt like I really should have been in the Cornell pool. My interviewer said that Cornell is forced to be more diverse. The dean's scholarship was anything but diverse... out of the 65 students there, 5 weren't white. It was a little ridiculous, hah.

My host was amazing and made me realize that plenty of fun could be had even being close to home.

I also think Rollins has made me swear off high school girls forever, haha.
