I'm considering applying for MITES, but I don't know much about it. Can someone give me an idea on what type of students get in the program?

What is a type of student?

In terms of grades/tests score/ECs

well...i went last year and let me tell you straight off....EVERYONE IS SMART AS HELL IN SOMETHING!...whether that be calculus, physics, bio, chem, or even the electives like web design or robotics everyone was well-versed in something. I mean in terms of test scores it varied..some has 2200s + others had 1700s or 1800s...but those who did (I'm not sure about this) but they probably had something else going for them like essays (yeah you have to write 4) or extracurriculars or recs. In terms of grades I'm pretty sure everyone was pulling A's and if not they were in some crazy hard schedule or studying at a college pulling B's. The thing though about this program, they don't care what you know coming into it, it helps obviously, but they try to push you to your breaking point not to be cruel, but to see how you respond to it. To see if you give up or push even harder when you score a 150/300 on your biochem midterm (because it will happen if you're in that class :-D). That said it was probably the best experience I've ever had and the ppl you meet there, you won't ever forget. So i mean, be ready because its competetive. Every one is just as smart as you so don't go in there thinking you're the ***** lol. But if you wanna know anything else, PM me or it me up on AIM

While on the topic, does anyone know approximately how many students apply to MITES yearly? Is there a breakdown of demographics or statistics anywhere?

I don't think MIT releases that kind of information. It all depends how many people are aware this sort of program exists.

@akybaky:

Wow, thanks for the info. You're description seems more of a turnoff for me rather than inspirational. Even though my chances are nil I'll at least apply for the heck of it.

BTW, are you a MIT student?

@ friedrice (cool name btw lol)

lol...don't be turned off...lol...i just got a lot of PMs from people who are kinda cocky ...and think that they will go in there and be great...so0 i was just putting it out there that its not as easy as you might seem lol..but it really is a great experience..i'd say apply and go if you get in ..its free (normally is would cost $6000 plus) not to mention the fact that (and i probably shouldn't be saying this) but about 80% of the kids get into MIT...and no i'm not at MIT (at least not yet..lol) i'm just another senior hopeful :-D

@technol21

this past year there were people as far east as Puerto Rico and people as far west as Alaska...they said they had about 25 states covered...so its pretty diverse..and i'm not sure how many people applied but there were 64 students and the admissions rate was less than 9%..so my guess around 700 kids...most students are minorities because it is a minority program but don't be discouraged there were a bunch of non-minority students also

Thanks for all the info, akybaky! It makes applying seem a little less scary now, especially since I've been looking forward to my chance to apply for at least 2 years now.

apply! it's such a great program. as long as you stay on top of your work it's not like EXTREMELY challenging especially since there's no pressure to get good grades since your evaluations are totally subjective. there are no actual grades for the courses, just on the individual p-sets, papers, and tests. MITES is free which is cool. there's a huge chance of being accepted to any college you want after MITES. in my class 62 people went of about 600 applicants. I'm not sure how many who were accepted decided not to go. you don't have to be an ethnic minority to attend. there was somethin else I wanted to say but I can't remember.

I’m in MITES 2012 and there are 80 of us. 1750 people applied so i guess that’s around a 5% acceptance rate
