I was admitted to the program for CBS. How competitive is this program? Do you need near Ivy statistics to get in? I also received a $15k scholarship.
@katnissjul are you saying that you got into the honors program in CBS or wanting to get in? Either way here are the stats for the middle 50% that get in to the honors program at the U.

Congrats on your scholarship!
@Henxnr I was admitted to CBS honors. It looks pretty competitive. Guess I should be proud!
Our student is a 1580 SAT, 4.8 GPA, all AP Honors, All 5’s, subject tests etc. admitted to CSE, but still no honors invite. It appears that our student’s stats are in the range, not sure why we haven’t heard yet, or if the invitation just isn’t forthcoming.
@anomy27 I am in the same situation, but with only a 1560 SAT let’s keep holding out!
Did you attend the honors reception last Friday? They said roughly the top 10% of applicants in each college are offered a spot in the honors program.
@threebeans Nope, I live in Nj. That’s a small acceptance rate!
Yes, we were at the honors reception last week too and the top 10% of each college is what was quoted.
@MusakParent what did you think of the honors reception?
Hi @threebeans It was moderately interesting. You were there also? My kid mostly just considered it marketing! I did like that they have a sample seminar and he found that interesting. He has not committed to the U of MN yet but it’s still prominent on his list. I suspect it would be higher if we didn’t live so close. If he does go to the U he will definitely be in honors housing, I think that would be a good fit. He would be a CLA/School of Music student. He has received some positive attention from the music program which doesn’t hurt either.
How about you? You were there as well?
We were there too - DD wasn’t sure the honors program would be a good fit. Her seminar discussion seemed overly competitive and she’s more collaborative. U of M remains one of her top two choices though!
Hi all - I have a sophomore currently in LSA Honors. She lived in Middlebrook last year and made great friends that now share an apartment in foundation owned buildings. The honors advising has been fantastic and the honors seminars really interesting. I wonder if the sample seminars seeming competitive may have been more due to the group of eager high school students wanting to make a good impression. Daughter’s seminar freshman year was with a creative writing professor who has NYTimes bestsellers and was an incredible mentor to the students. Some of her friends decided not to continue with the honors program because their career goals didn’t include grad school, but for those that are thinking about continuing on - I would highly recommend it.
@TravelMom402 you could be right about the kids wanting to make a good impression. That’s why I think it’s important to attend these type of things when possible - vibe and seeing what your peers are going to be like to make the best decision. It certainly didn’t turn her off of “The U”, just might not be as interested in the honors if she goes. She does plan on getting a masters or PhD though, so she might change her mind. I’ll just be glad when she decides and I know where she’s going!
For those familiar with the program, what do you consider to be the most valuable benefit of the program? does it include priority registration?
That is interesting @threebeans. My kid didn’t get that impression at all from his seminar. Did she feel that the professor set that tone? I could see why having even one or two overly chatty teens in a quick seminar like that could be jarring for some. My kid is not interested in cut throat competitive environments at all. He very much just stays in his lane with his own academics and enjoys collaborating with engaged peers.
My kid is also a likely candidate for grad school. I’m mostly interested in it for him for honors housing right now because I think that would be great for him socially (not likely to be the party type) though I hope he would follow through and take advantage of the opportunities available.
