How Competitive is Transfer Admission?

I’m interested in applying for Fall 2007 transfer admissions. What should I emphasize in my application/essays? Is it generally VERY competitive to gain transfer acceptance? Any help on the process will be greatly appreciated.

Hey rain... there is a guy in the Notre Dame forums under the name Irish68178...... he is knows a lot about transfering... he has a website that details what you should do.. he also was accepted as a transfer into BC.. so he would be a good one to talk to

Thank you Chillin! Also, does anyone know which Mid Year Grade Report Boston College requires for transfers? I have an account on the Common Application site, but in the required forms section, I found no "mid-year grade report" for transfers.

Since I found this thread, I will go ahead and provide some info over here and then just feel free to get in touch with anything else you need. First of all, this link will give you the whole application, including the common application, and the mid-year grade report is at the bottom. http://www.bc.edu/admission/undergrad/meta-elements/pdf/06-07Applications/transfer_app_0607.pdf

BC is a tough school to transfer into as their acceptance rate is only 15%. However, if you have a good reason to wish to transfer and meet the other requirements you should have a good shot. Here is a link with statistics.

I will give you some brief advice on the essay and what they are looking for, but for more detail head to my website at www.nd.edu/~mnadorff/transfer. While most of it is tailored for ND, some does apply to other schools. Additionally, I actually have my BC essay posted there because I liked it better than my ND essay for reasons I explain on the website.

Long story short, if you are a transfer student you are filling holes. People transfer out or leave BC and they have some space open and that is why they accept transfers. However, acceptance is sometimes dependent on how popular the major you are transferring into is, so keep that in mind. Sometimes it is in your best interest to transfer into an unpopular major and then change it at BC.

With the idea of filling a hole, the other thing you have to tell them is WHY. You need to tell them why you want to transfer, and why they should accept you. The best thing is, if possible, to have an academic reason for transferring and then show BC how you can fill one of its needs. What I did was I got in touch with all of their psychology professors and I found that they had a need for research assistants. I also was dissapointed in my first school due to the lack of research opportunities. Due to this, in my essay I was able to say that my old school wasn't meeting my needs, that BC would in this way, and that I would be able to fill this need that currently existed at BC. By doing this I not only showed how I could fit but I also showed a desire to go there by doing more than just paying the application fee and mailing in the application, you know? I actually did the research which I think is important for any applicant to do, but especially a transfer applicant. It is one of those things where actions speak louder than words, and doing the research means more than saying "I am very interested in BC."

I hope that helps some, please let me know if you have questions. Also, I apologize to the BC board for invading but I just wanted to try to help.

Thank you very much Irish! I will PM you if I have any more questions. I just want to say how nice it is to have a thoughtful person such as yourself, on a public forum like this.

Thank you for the compliment, I appreciate it. Good luck!

Irish, would you midn telling me how you got in touch with the BC professors? Are the links to their e-mail posted somewhere on the BC site?

Usually, yes. If you go to the department you want to transfer to, they should have all the emails listed along with their list of faculty.
