How Competitive is UMass Amherst?

Hey,

I've received a mixed bag of comments based on how "hard" or "easy" umass amherst is to get in. some say that you just have to be "average" to get in, while others claim that it's fairly challenging to get into this school. so what do you guys think? what're your experiences with umass amherst and do you guys have any tips on what I can do to boost my chances of getting in? Thanks for your info! :)

PS. just ask if you want my high school info like gpa, classes, ECs, etc.

Panther, are you in-state or out? Give me some idea of your academic record please. UMass Amherst is really interested in out of state students. There is an long article on UMass Amherst in the Boston Globe 9/5. The article might talk you out of going there. You also might consider one of the UMass regional campuses like Lowell or Dartmouth where a lot of money has been diverted to.

I’m out-of-state (i live in california), but i’ve lived in massachusetts before for about 11 months. Here’s my academic profile:

3.6 GPA (unweighted)/3.8 GPA (weighted)
Top 25% of class
2150 SAT
Tutored After school everyday for 2 hours (for free, volunteer work) - about 600 hours worth
Key Club Member for 2 years, about 15 hours each year (junior and senior year)
Played tennis for junior year and senior year (varsity)
Took tons of AP/Honors Classes -

Sophomore Year: Chemistry Honors
Junior Year: American Literature Honors, AP Biology, and APUSH
Senior Year: AP English 4, AP Economics, Physics Honors, and AP Calculus A/B

Hmmmm, i’ve heard that umass amherst is the best umass campus there is and that it’s also an excellent university. i’m thinking of being a biology major to put myself on track for medical school.

I’d say you are in. UMass is desperate for out-of-state students.
