I just applied to UROP and was wondering how competitive admission is. Thanks for any posts.

I don’t think it’s super competitive, since even if you gain acceptance, you still have to apply to the projects that interest you. Also, priority is given to incoming freshmen, I believe.

On a similar note, how long do you think the responses to the short answers are? There are no word-limit or guidelines…

so wait, you can get accepted then not get a project? how many people does that happen to?

well you need to search for a project.

idk how competitive it is, but i did not get in… i’m an honors student.
I was talking to some of my friends about this and they thought that urop likes to accept those who have a lower chance of doing research than those who are basically guaranteed to get a spot as an undergraduate. no idea is that was the case or not, but I was waitlisted. and now thankfully, i’m working in a great research lab.

how did you get in that great research lab? did you have previous research experience?

I thought UROP is first-come-first-served? When did you apply? I can see why one would get waitlisted if one applies after all the spots are filled.

I applied in the summer… sometime when everyone else was applying. it wasn’t late.
As for the research I’m doing right now, it literally fell from the sky into my lap.
There is a story behind it, but i’m not gonna share it here.

You do NOT need UROP at all. Research positions are very easy to find around here (given that we are a top research university). All you need to do is email the professor/PI with whom you are interested in doing research and most likely, he/she will hire you. If they don’t hire you, then you move on to the next PI and repeat the process until someone else does. If you have no experience, you won’t be getting paid, though.

in general, how many hours/week does someone usually spend on UROP?

In what area are most of the research opportunities offered by UROP? I am interested in searches in social sciences. Are there many opportunities at UROP for me? Am I suggested to apply to UROP? Thanks!
