How competitive is your high school and how hard is it to become valedictorian?

For some reason, it seems like on CC everyone goes to an ultra-competitive cutthroat high school where there are 1000 people in every grade and many go to Ivies every year.

My school only has like 350 people per grade and nobody every becomes an Intel finalist or wins a huge academic competition or goes to Harvard or anything. I kinda wish my high school was more competitive because it's not that hard at all to be top 5 in my class. I guess it might be because I live in southern VA and it seems like most people on CC come from the Northeast or California :P

What's your high school like and how large is your class? And how many top-20 acceptances does your school get every year?

Pretty average. We have about 300 students per class. Most college bound kids take AP courses their sophomore and junior year, then completely slack off their senior year. We have maybe a few Top 20 caliber students per class–nothing special.

Competitiveness in sports (by which I just mean football) is celebrated much more often than academic excellence at our school, so that might have something to do with the low motivation.
