Dont get carry away by this Newsweek ranking. This ranking is worthless. To get high ranking the schools from this list just pay students to take AP Exams. As matter of fact students from those so-called top school perform very bad on the AP Exams.

My d's hs school has steadily fallen from the 500's in 2003 to over 1000 in this year's ranking. They lost 200 points this past year alone.

my school is like number 53 in Ny state --> imagine what it will be in the nation (no I don't want to know)!

My school is Canadian, so so Newsweek rankings pour moi
But, we're still pretty competitiveish.

According to Newsweek, we're in the lower 600s this year. But honestly, that list overall is very deceptive. Yeah, we have a lot of people taking APs...including a lot of people who are but shouldn't be. Our school system basically allows you into any class that you want as long as your parents say they won't contest the grade if you take a "too hard" class. And next year our rating will probably be much higher, because they're now forcing you to take the test if you take the class.

Ivies-wise, we typically get a few into Cornell, one or two to Brown or Dartmouth, rarely any into any other Ivy. In a class of 500 this year, we've got 5 going to Cornell and 1 to Princeton. (Recruited athlete, though, with under 2000 SATs and a 92 average. Which just makes me mad, honestly.)

As far as my view of our competitiveness, we're not too competitive. The people in the top honors classes are occasionally a little competitive, but the majority of the school is not. And even many of the people in the honors classes don't really care, so the level of competition is pretty low.

affle,

100% agree with you. The Newsweek ranking is worthless!

Our school should be #1. We had 3 AP tests taken this year with 0 graduating seniors. 3/0? :D

out of the top ten people everyone else at my school are hobo bound....i live in hick country people got ****ed at me because i got a 1780 on the SAT they said i was braggibng

LOL..Country? Should I be offended?

my school is 97 percent white and three percent hispanic nothing else....

my school is HORRIBLE. No one has ever got into HYP in the last 83 years......NO ONE. But i'll be the first. My school only offers 10 AP's (only 6 people were in AP chem. this year). Also, our standerdized test scores are so low (not me of course), that they implemented this high school reform program called America's Choice. eww!!!

Also, in the AP USH class last year (15 People), 10 got a score of 1, 4 people recieved of score of 2, and only one person got a 3(which is still bad).

My school will never be on Newsweek's list, unless something miraculous happens. Very few people take APs. In some sections of the SAT, our scores are above the state and/or national average; in writing, I think they're below. Most graduates go to community college. Three grads in the entire 101-year history of the school have gone on to Stanford (one to Dartmouth, but no other really elite schools); two of them were a pair of siblings with genius parents who homeschooled them for most of their lives. The third--me--oh, hell, I'll stop pretending--I was also mostly homeschooled until high school, and I had to really fight the system to get the kind of education I wanted from the school. Lots of independent study classes (more than they technically allow you to have) and homeschooling over the summer for no credit.

On the other hand, in general we're all nice to each other and are very laid-back. It's quite nice. We have a BIG reputation for being extremely affectionate and "touchy" with one another--not stand-offish at all. Only rarely do I hear girls in the bathroom raging about friends who stab them in the back or otherwise offend them, and when I do, it's usually a problem about boys or something... NEVER, EVER about academics. While I wasn't particularly close to anyone in my class, there wasn't anyone whom I disliked or who--as far as I know--disliked or was jealous of me. And I was at the tip-top of the heap, academically. Even one of the other valedictorians--one of the top valedictorians (there were 9, not all of whom had taken any hard classes)--said one day, "I don't know why we have so many vals. We should have only one val, it should be [Anniushka], and that's it!"

So we're not the mean kind of competitive, either. It's not a bad thing, in my opinion. The bad thing is that the school hardly caters to the smart students. The smartest students really have to struggle to get the education they need and deserve. And it's the only high school in the area--so there's no other choice. :(

Seeing as people in other schools can take a gazillion AP classes each year and at lower grades, my high school stinks....

very competetive public
11/300 to Harvard
many to IVIES or top 20 schools

oh about 1/90th of a year haha! THANK YOU GOD! i graduate on tuesday!

I'd say my high school is a wannabe public elite, lol. A lot of the students have a pretty high opinion about our academics, but not a lot of us try to learn anything. They want to go to a "good college." It's not very intellectual, save for a few english and AP courses. Math is pretty.. um. And science is inconsistent from year to year. The admin is more concerned with locking the few smokers out of the bathroom than actually getting to know the student body.
A lot of you guys mentioned Newsweek rankings, too. The admin went a little manic over here and, thusly, made AP exams mandatory if you take the class. And no financial aid. Eighty dollars, suckers. :

yes, a couple of schools in our school district is on there.
Rancho Bernardo High School - just over #500...
Poway High - just under #650
Mt. Carmel High - just over #450

But um, our school, not on here. Go figure... everybody in our school says we're too "AP-cultured"... guess they were wrong
Yes, we are competitive, two students are going to Harvard, many are going to UCLA or UC Berkeley, and one person in our orchestra went to Yale last year

Very competitive.
Ranked early 200's & it's a "public elite".

very competitive BS
like 10/80 to harvard
3 to princeton
2 yale
6 georgetown
5 vandy
4 duke
etc...

Semi-competitive HS. The school principal and teachers always like to brag about what a "wonderful and special" school we are, and what amazing opportunities we provide... and while we're certainly a very good school, nobody here is very competitive. We only participate in USNCO, we offer only 14 APs, we send about 3 people to ivy league schools per year, and then ~15 more to other very good schools... etc. (370 in my class). We're okay. Ha, ha.
