How can colleges tell how competitive your school is? Is there a big gigantic list of difficult schools that I don't know about?

extremely competitive public high school. lots of asians (like myself) and 800+ students. One B will drop your rank to the 30's. I don't want to give too much extra info (for fear of revealing my school) but we are a mathematical powerhouse :)

unless your hs is some ancient, renowned, prep school chances are that not every college in the country will know about it. on a statewide scale though, it might have some reputation. haha i think uc's cut our 60% asian school (lol it's a "mathematical powerhouse" too  ) some slack because they know what a joyless, souless place it is. i'd really think i went to the same school as juzam_djinn if we didn't have over 2000 students. haha about 25% of them aren't even supposed to be here, they just fake their addresses to get in and don't bother paying the property taxes that acutally keep the school afloat. we're in the middle of a purge of the people outside the district though, it's actually kinda sad considering how early some of those people get up to drive here in the morning...wow i got off-topic

how reliable do you think newsweek's report on the top 100 schools based on AP offerings is?

They rank High Schools based on how many APs they offer?! thats kinda.... sad, don't ya think?
I think my high school offered all but 3 or 4 APs, as well as a full IB program, but I doubt we're on any ranking. Hell, I think it's pathetic to be ranking high schools at all. Seriously, does that strike anyone else as odd?

Anyway, to the original topic, deus.ex is right. Colleges likely won't know about your hs. There are a few exceptions. For example, if that college has a regional admissions officer who knows about high schools from a particular area. Second, on a state or regional level, if your high school has a good reputation, colleges in that area would probably know about it. Or if your school sends a lot of students to a particular university. My high school, for example, sends a lot of students to USC and LMU every year, and I'm sure their adcoms knows about my hs.

LOL
haha about 25% of them aren't even supposed to be here, they just fake their addresses to get in and don't bother paying the property taxes that acutally keep the school afloat.
deus, this is EXACTLY like my school
also, i meant 800 in my class alone hehe, we have around 3000+ total (the high asian percentage makes class ranking a joke)

well, I'm from New York baby!!!
right here in Brooklyn, man!!!!!!!!!!
I go to Midwood high school at Brooklyn College.
It's a competitive school, but we're so broke right now (it's public) and don't have everything in mint condition, like Stuyvesant H.S does.
but Midwood has alot of devoted kids, who win Intel or at least become Semi finalists. Good athletes, currently one of the b-ball team girls won some scholarship/or sponsorship...and the news reporter came to take pics of her.
we have kids who are really good in art, music, and acting--we set up concerts to raise money for the Tsunami victims.
sooo, Midwood is really cool.
....can't wait till I graduate...LOL :)

Our school is pretty decent, its been pretty cut throat GPA-wise for the past few years. We've got some super genius math kids at our school too. However, this years freshmen are pretty darn stupid, I'm pretty our reputation is going down the drain with them.

Then again, I'm in Kansas, how good can we get? ;)

not very competitive. only about 20-40 students in the class are actually serious about academics...imo

pretty competitive. btw are public schools in fairfax county well known by colleges?

I aint a college rep, but fairwax..where????
sorry, it's real arrogant of me, I know.
it doesn't matter what school you go to for colleges really.
