How competitive is TCNJ?

TCNJ is becoming increasingly more competetive with 44% applicants admitted last last. For more info, here's a link to the school's fact book: http://ir.intrasun.tcnj.edu/factbook/. I definitely recommend considering TCNJ, not only as a back-up school if you're a NJ resident. Despite the infamous budget cuts, the school is doing very well and a lot of student activities are continued to be funded. I'm currently a freshman at the College, so I'll be happy to answer any questions that you might have!

I have a question for your Tally1. I am a new jersey resident residing within the county tcnj is in. I currently attend Mercer county community college. My Gpa is not too good but it's a 3.0 what are my chances?
I have 4 years of volunteering with the state. and now i currently work for the state.
help

mindless-doll, what were your grades like in high school, your sat score? tcnj might still want to take a look at that! any more info would help me give you a better idea of whether you would be a good match for the school!

tally - an unrelated question -- the reputation tcnj has is that its a suitcase school, ie many people head home on weekends -- what is your view on this? what are weekends like there?

Because the overwhelming majority of students at TCNJ is from New Jersey, many feel tempted to go home on weekends since they live so close. And the truth is, there is a noticeable difference on campus, especially in the dining halls, which suddenly become much less crowded. But that is not to say that everyone leaves and there is absolutely nothing to do! TCNJ has been trying very hard to shed this reputation of being a suitcase school by offering Friday and Saturday night events for students and interest as many people as possible in staying and being an active part of the community. That said, there aren't that many parties at TCNJ and the weekend life on campus is more on a quiet side. In my opinion, unless the school becomes more well-known outside of NJ and more out-of-state students enroll, the suitcase school reputation, whether more or less accurate, will stay. There will always be students who live less that an hour away and crave home-made food and their own rooms! That's normal! :) But while some people leave, those who stay always find something to do. Even just hanging out and watching a movie in your friend's room be a fun time! And TCNJ is really big on "freshman floor" experience so you'll get to know all your neighbors very quickly and meet a lot of people! So, in short, before you decide to come here, try to figure out if the school would be a good fit for you, and don't worry about the rumors that the campus looks dead on weekends, it's really not that bad! Hope I helped! If you have any more questions, let me know!

Good insight Tally.. But TCNJ does have weekly frat parties (some on Tuesday nights because many students, like me, don't have a Wednesday class (classes at TCNJ are generally monday-thursday and tuesday-friday with a few classes available on wednesday..

In an effort to increase it's income TCNJ has been accepting many more out-of-state applicants but this is also helping it to become a more well known school. I found that few kids really went home and that many just stayed in to have fun on their floor and study, giving The College the appearance of having fewer kids there on weekends.

tally 1,

I am a Chinese student from Hong Kong, currently studying with the IB Diploma (year 13). I am not a very bright student, I got only 460 in SAT CR but 750 in Maths (may be typical for Asian students), 98 in TOEFL ibt (equal to 550 for computer-based). I am interested in Chemistry.

Do you think I may be accepted and can survive in TCNJ (if so luckily acceptaed). Are most students in TCNJ near-Ivy eligible and are very smart from most aspects? Do you think international students will be happy in TCNJ as TCNJ is not internationalized)? Do you hear anything from your international collegemates? Where do they come from? Any from China or Hong Kong?

please kindly give me some advice.
