I’m a rising junior and I’m planning on applying ED to Wharton School at UPenn and I was wondering how i could strengthen my application. My UW GPA is 4.0 and W is 4.7. I’m not submitting SAT since it is only 1400, but I am submitting ACT, which I got 35 on. I am currently the treasurer of two clubs, i work part time at a harris teeter, and I will have 500 hours of community service by the time i apply.Hooks include that I am a hispanic who will be the first in my family to go to college.
My school doesn’t have any business clubs, no DECA, no FBLA, nothing, so I can’t do any of that. I am however taking many classes this year that will show my interest in business including Macro econ, micro econ, and intro to business.
How could I stand out when applying against the other applicants that will have won national business competitions, are the head of all business clubs at their school, and have taken many courses that show their interests?
Have you taken any SAT IIs? I believe Penn recommends two.
maybe try getting an internship this summer that has something to do with what you are indicating you want to major in at wharton
If you don’t have business experience, you’ll definitely be in the minority when applying to Wharton, just know that. However, you shouldn’t be worried. Just focus on a few ECs that really mean something to you, and amplify your passions through those. Business experience isn’t an absolute must for Wharton, but it definitely helps.
I’d recommend growing those two clubs of yours, or starting a venture of your own – that’ll show dedication and perseverance - something they really like to see. For instance, if you play an instrument, compose something. If you’re treasurer of those clubs, propose a new budget that might help you guys expand or save money for newer and stronger opportunities for your members.
Also, since it’s summer, try to explore some and do something you may have always wanted to do. Check out some MOOCs, learn how to program, learn a new skill or hobby, travel somewhere, etc.
At the end of the day, just make sure you show Wharton your strengths and why YOU should be admitted over everyone else applying.
Stand out with your essays! Be specific and have tons of people read/edit them! Practice for an interview also if you’re offered one.

Here are my questions please?
a) Do I have a chance and should I apply for ED in Wharton ?
b) What should I do in my summer, which will boost my chance to get in ?
c) Can I apply ED in Wharton and also apply EA in other colleges as well ? If got in, will withdraw others
I really appreciate your inputs
Thank you very much
Yes, apply ED to Wharton and EA elsewhere. In particular find places that will offer you strong merit scholarships (early deadlines).
More than a high school business class, you’d need to take either advanced math classes or (and?) dual enrollment college classes.
Wharton is half business (very quantitative) and half liberal arts. Strong math and social science /humanities background combined with experience would be optimal.
They’re interested in students who make a difference - so your volunteering shouldn’t be counted in hours but in measurable impact. Better yet, how can you show initiative helping the places you volunteer at, and combine a spirit of service with a spirit of entrepreneurship? So in my opinion your summer should be spent doing just that.
Thank you very much for your response. I really appreciate your inputs. Along with ED to Wharton, can we apply
to other colleges in EA as well ? I thought when we do ED, we need to send to only that college ? please let me know
Thank you very much
Dude you sound in pretty good shape. And I got a perfect thing to add… your school doesn’t have business clubs? MAKE ONE!!! It will show leadership (will is a little lacking relative to the rest of your stats).
You can apply anywhere that allows you to - but if admitted to Wharton with sufficient aid * you must drop all other acceptances and applications.

Very good suggestion.
