How did class registration for Fall 2014 work out?

My son had 12th rotation. He was going to use a priority, however his department adviser told him not to use it so soon. He checked and the two classes he wanted were filled before the priority selection dates even opened, so he decided to just go with his original 12th rotation. He got into two classes (Calc 4 and Linear Algebra) and is wait-listed for Organic Chemistry and general ed. English. He already talked to the Chemistry professor and he said my son will get into his Organic Chemistry class. All other GE’s were filled with huge wait lists.

My son is working at SLO this summer, so he signed up for one class and got it, and later decided to try to get that GE English class (that he’s wait-listed for fall) out of the way during the summer (and is now #1 on the summer wait-list for English). He feels that he’ll most likely get into the summer English class and will be there the first day (and will then drop the wait listed fall English class).

He’s unsure whether he will even attempt to get into another class at SLO for fall (he will have 13 units, including Organic Chemistry, and will receive additional units for lab work). He’s thinking about taking a GE class online from Foothill to get it out of the way this fall. We’ll see how that goes.

Next summer he hopes to have an internship, and plans to take a few GE classes on line to get them out of the way.
Overall, his schedule wasn’t bad (considering he had 12th rotation) but it’s unfortunate that it’s so difficult to get into those GE classes!

Tell us your story, good or bad!

11th rotation, started out in 7 units. Spent lots of time updating the student center to get into classes. After lots of work, had 22 units. Dropped to of the classes and ended up in 14 units. During the first week, crashed classes to get into different sections. Eventually got every classes I needed and all great teachers.

It’s good getting those bad rotations out as soon as possible. Save the good rotations and priorities for when you need them as an upperclassmen and to graduate on time.

Promising to hear what r77r77 has to say, because I cannot register until August 18th and EVERY class I needed, is filled. There isn’t even a class I can possibly register for - I’ll be wait listing every class and crashing as many as possible.

As a transfer student I’m lucky to have all of my GE’s completed with the exception of a couple major support courses. However, it is incredible how much of a set back it is to just miss one class.

Due to the typical course offerings per academic year, if I am not able to get into differential equations it will extend my graduation date by 2-3 quarters or possibly more. It worries me to see that I could possibly have 4 years left at Cal Poly, after spending 2.5 years at a community college.

Keeping my fingers crossed…

@c172pilot – According to assist.org, Cal Poly’s Math 242 (Diff Eq) is equivalent to Cuesta’s Math 287, so you could take that class at cuesta or another CC if needed. You can also ask in Academic Advising if there is another class at Cal Poly that could substitute for Differential Equations if you are unable to get it when you need it. Cal Poly (with pressure from the State of CA) is trying to get students to graduate on time, and they don’t want you held up by not being able to get a class you need.

ralph4, I hadn’t considered that but I am going to go ahead and apply to Cuesta so I can do just that. The only problem is it may conflict with other classes, but it would be worth it to get that class under my belt.
