How did/do you choose your college?

Hi,
First time poster, as a matter of fact it's the first time I post on any forum, I'm just a lurker. :)

I'm going to study in the US, I was curious, how do I find the college that's right for me? I have no shot at an Ivy league, so I'm not even considering those, especially seeing that I only have TOEFL scores since they don't give SAT's here.

It seems that if I want to check out just one college, it takes hours of research to see how I'm going to livei and the cost of it, and to get an idea about the people in the unversity and the state/city i, weather, academics, race percentages, etc. and that's just ONE college, I don't have time to look though hundreds of colleges!!

How'd you find your college? Are you happy are you right now with your choice? Would you consider a transfer?

Thanks
-A confused dude

Buy a few guides like Fiske or the Princeton Review. After you narrow down your choices to certain cities you could buy city guides for those cities (Frommer's Guide to Boston, etc.) Loren Pope has written two books about schools that are not Ivies or top 50 but are good schools. He doesn't cover all the schools like that, but his books make a good start. You can also check out studentsreview.com, epinions, livejournal, and the Princeton Review website. And, of course, you can pick the brains of the people here. It isn't easy doing this long distance, but it can be a sort of fun process.
If you search the archives of the old College Confidential, there are many threads about international students looking for particular types of colleges, financial aid, etc. Welcome to the board and good luck!

Thanks, I've bookmarked that page you recommended and bought the book. Any more replies?

I got a notice that rayxcappo replied to this post, and I read what he/she had to say in the e-mail, but now I see it was deleted! I was going to comment on it, but if you decided to delete it, then that's fine, I guess you took back the words you said or don't want people to know or something, so I won't point out what you said.

Sometimes the board moderators will delete a post if it is inappropriate.

jym626, It wasn't anywhere near inappropriate, rayxcappo just mentioned on what bases he/she chose the university upon. Nothing inappropriate, actually it was the very helpful for me.

Hmmm... very mysterious.... I don't se any other posts anywhere by a person by that name )rayxcappo)....if you try a search, nothing shows up.. very mysterious....
