How did I get accepted to UCSB?

When I found out that I was accepted to UCSB I was freaking shocked. I was sure that UCR would be my only option, because it was the only UC that I got accepted to. My friend, who also applied to UCSB, got rejected. I found it surprising, because he had a slightly higher SAT, GPA, and took AP classes during Soph. and Jr. years while I didn't. Also, he was involved in tennis and clubs and volunteered. For me, however, I had absolutely no ECs. I guess it must have been my personal statement?

“I guess it must have been my personal statement?”

Yes, most likely; people underestimate a well-crafted essay. This is holistic admissions at work. Each applicant is evaluated in context of the opportunities they had available. So despite any academic disadvantages, UCSB believed you have great potential. As for your friend, there’s only so many spots available at UCSB. Whichever school he ended at, he’ll likely be successful there. Love the school that loved you, and you’ll thrive!

What was your SAT and GPA?

My highest SAT score was 1860(after 3 tries) and GPA(out of 4.0) was 3.6
