I'm a Senior in High School, I applied to FSU way back in October. I was beyond excited to find out I was accepted in December for the Summer 2013 Term. However, I see the amount of kids who got accepted and started to compare our stats. Simply put, I feel as though I'm unworthy of FSU, or they made some mistake.

I never did the essay, but I submitted my resume.
My GPA is a 3.179 unweighted and a 4.5 weighted. (The reason for this was I had a horrible freshman year-so much so I ended up transferring schools)
Took AP US History and AP English Composition and passed both (with a 3)
My grades have been okay, I messed up in my math and my science classes, but never received anything lower than a C.

SAT Scores (second attempt-retaking them on saturday):
CR-600
Math-540
Writing- 520

As far as extracurricular activites
-I was President of my Drama Club
-Head Photographer for my schools Yearbook
-Active participate in my schools National Honor Society
-I volunteered at a summer camp in my city for two summers (537 hours to be exact)

Work Experience
-Held a part time job at a law office my Junior year
-Got an internship for the school district the summer prior to my senior year and have maintained it for my senior year
-I left the job at the law office during the summer, and got a job at VS Pink at the beginning of Senior Year (so yes, I have an internship and a job)

As for my senior year- I currently have 3 AP Classes (Environmental Science, Government/Economics, English) Honors/Gifted Pre Calculus, Digital Design (our yearbook class), Weight Training, and leadership development.

So with all this, and knowing how I stand with the other applicants...how did I get accepted?!?!? I really want to know.

Most likely because your weakest area- test scores- aren’t bad on the SAT side, and even though some of your ACT scores are a bit weak, FSU doesn’t weight them nearly as much as course rigor or your GPA when considering you for admission.

@Ilovethe47 I’m a Female Caucasian (So I’m not a recipient of affirmative action), and I know very well the gift I have received. FSU was my top dream school, but I never thought I would get in (A former teacher told me flat out that my chances were slim). I’m just sort of shocked, I see some of the kids that got deferred and I wonder why they didn’t get accepted and I did. I don’t want to let anyone down when I go up there.

Your test scores aren’t that bad–at least the Math and CR. If you had a bad freshman year, maybe they saw the subsequent upward trend and concluded that you’ve gotten it together enough to succeed.

No offense to that teacher, but that’s why you don’t want to ever put stock in what someone that likely has no recent experience in this area says. One of my biggest regrets from high school honestly was ever listening to any of the talking heads at my school that tried to give advice about college, because they were wrong on damn near everything.

FSU looks for a high level of academic course rigor, a good GPA, and if necessary, an upward trend (although, mostly they just don’t want to see a downward trend) in your grades. Test scores, since they can be taken over and over until you’re satisfied, aren’t as important, and as mentioned above, your scores aren’t bad (except Science on the ACT).

I wish you all the success in the world, but one can speculate and wonder
if there is another Meg Miller out there with a rejection notice hitting her mailbox now ?

Well your grades definitely does make you a shoe in to get accepted to FSU.

But if I ignore your academics, I would probably still accept you if you at least made the bare minimum, because of your resume.

Even when a person is an academic gifted, they can still be dumb as a door nail, because they have no life experience. While someone who has a dramatically lower academics, but a lot of life experience can achieve much more success than the gifted person ever could. The school can teach people academics, but those who had some prior real world experience, know how to use the school to it’s full potential. And I’m sure the school would love to see a future CEO list FSU as their alma mater.

You’re life experience is being a leader, mentor (if you were a counselor at camp), worker.

Sorry if this doesn’t make sense, I had a long day.

I got a 24 on the ACT’s as well. I have a lot of things in my resume too: class secretary, student council, ambassadors, NHS, French honor society, varsity track and cross country, etc. I got accepted on December too! I thought I wasn’t going to get in because I didn’t turn in an essay. I got into schools that were a farther reach than FSU… So lesson learned: don’t doubt yourself and don’t let people that don’t believe you can do something get to you

3.12 UW, 4.04W (3.5 FSU gpa)
2000 SAT (660 R, 630 M, 710 W)

so really its not that surprising, we had the same unweighted gpa almost. I knew I was a shoe-in though, based on test scores and my AP classes and 32 credit hours from that combined with Dual Enrollment. FSU is gonna be great, but honestly dude don’t question it, it’s not super hard to get into. It’s no Berkeley or Vanderbilt

fmhskid: You weren’t a shoe-in based on your test scores. Nobody is a shoe-in because of one aspect of their application, and especially not the one that FSU considers to be least important of the big three (GPA, course rigor, and test scores, with test scores being least important of these 3). You were accepted because you’re a well-rounded applicant.

LookOverThere: A 3.18 unweighted isn’t really all that high, not to mention that with a 3.18 unweighted, it’s impossible per FSU’s calculations it would be impossible to have a 4.5 weighted.

It’s already been said why they were accepted: They had decent test scores, a decent GPA, and a good level of academic course rigor, as well as an overall upward trend in their grades, which shows that more than likely, any bad grades received early on were an anomaly.

Pasbal, FSU was not looking at his 3.18 GPA. FSU uses weighted GPA’s. FSU’s weighted GPA is different than what’s listed on his transcript, but it’s still likely very high if he has a 4.5 weighted GPA at his school.

Even if his weighted GPA was .5 lower, he’d still be in the upper quartile for summer. Even at a whole point lower, he’s still in the summer middle 50%.
